Lesson 1: Factors that Affects the Promotion of Good Mental Health
Good mental health is more than just the absence of mental illness. It
can be seen as a state of mental health that allows one to fully enjoy life.
But there are also factors that affect the promotion of having a good mental
health.
FACTORS THAT AFFECT MENTAL HEALTH
1. HEREDITARY FACTOR
 Mental disorders can be inherited through the genes of one or
both parents who have history of mental illness.
2. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTOR
 The cause of some mental disorders may be the environment.
 Examples of environmental factors that affect mental health are
o Family Violence – it is when you feel unsafe, powerless
or afraid due to the actions of someone close to you.
o Grief and Loss – Grief is a natural response to loss.
o Bullying – Bullying of any form or for any reason can
have a long-term effect on those people who are involved.
o Abuse – Abuse may be physical, sexual, psychological or
verbal. It can cause feelings of lack of self-confidence,
depression, isolation and anger that can impair someone’s
chance to lead a happy life.
o Inadequate sleep – Lack of sleep can have a major
impact on our mood, concentration, memory and quality
of life. A good night’s sleep is important to our mental and
physical health and well-being.
3. BRAIN FACTOR
 The brain is our body’s computer that controls our physical and
mental functions.
 A person’s mental health status is influenced by anything that
affects the brain.
 When someone’s mental health is destroyed, the result will
be Mental Disorders.
 Negative thoughts and feelings are poisonous to
wellness. Follow up question:

Have you ever felt being stressed to something and under pressure as
a teenager? These pressures cannot be avoided but worrying about them is
normal. However, if these worries are prolonged, the feelings of sadness,
hopelessness, and worthlessness, could be signs of a mental health.
The factors affecting the promotion of a good mental health are
loneliness; grief and loss; family violence; bullying; abuse, sleeping
problems; and; alcohol and drug abuse. These are but a few of the factors
that can affect the promotion of a good mental health.
