ONLINE SEARCH
INTRODUCTION
Hello Senior High! In this lesson you will learn to:

Have you ever searched the Internet for a certain information where the search engine
returned a different result? For example, if you were to search for “The Madonna” as the
representation of Mary in the form of an art, you would probably use the keyword “Madonna” to
search for in on the net. But if you use the same keyword nowadays, you are more likely to
stumble upon “Madonna”, the music artist instead. And if you used “The Madonna” to search for
“The Madonna” in the first place, you’ll be directed in the right place.
The information that we need is more likely available in the Internet. It is just a matter of
how to look for it and how to use information form the most credible source.
LESSON AND PRACTICES
Contextual Search is an attempt to be more precise in providing the list of documents
according to the words used by the user to search the Internet. The websites that are
programmed to scan the contents of the available information on the internet is called Search
Engine. The search engine can perform searching operation based on the texts or words the
user provided and search those that are truly useful and relevant to the user A good contextual
search engine would request for more information to narrow down the result of the search.
Here are some tips in conducting a contextual online search:
1. Have a question in mind

Focus on a question you want to answer. In writing the term on the search bar of
the search engine (Google for example), it is best to write your topic in a question format
than writing the actual term alone. For example, instead of writing “Computer” on the
search bar, write “What is a computer?” in this case, search engines will be forced to give
definitions of computer and topics like advertisements about computers will be eliminated.
2. Narrow it down
Be specific in writing the term or question in the search bar. Search engines like
Google, Bing or Yahoo use several filters to determine the most appropriate results for
you. This may be affected by your location or your previous history of using the internet.
If you are looking for used or second-hand cars made by Toyota, instead of just
typing “Toyota Car” try “Used 2010 Toyota Corolla”. This will lessen the volume of results
that will be generated and you’ll get the correct information that you need.
Using keywords can also lessen the amount of search results. Keywords are
terms that are used in by most search engines to find related documents. Put the word
“AND” between each keyword to create a search string. Example, if you want an answer
for this question: “What precautionary measures should you observe when you are logged
in in a public computer?” your keywords are:

You can write that in your search engine using the AND operator as:
“Precautionary measures AND observe AND logged-in AND public computer”
Aside from using AND operator, here are other special operators you can use for
a better search in google search.
Subtraction
– (Negative Symbol). By including a hyphen (-) before a word in a query, you can instruct
a search engine to reject pages that prominently feature that term. This is particularly
useful when you are looking for a certain piece of information and the word, you're using
has several definitions. For instance, the term 'steel drum' could apply to either Michael
Scott's preferred musical instrument or a barrel used to transport liquids. If you were solely
interested in the instrument, a search for 'steel drum barrels' would return a page devoid
of industrial sites.
Similar Results
~ (Tilde). By prefacing a word with the “~” sign, you are asking the search engine that you
are looking for terms that are similar to the one you typed. Therefore, if you're looking for
a used “car” but may also be interested in a “pre-owned van” or a “secondhand vehicle”,
a decent search word to use is “~used ~cars”.

Similar Results
“” (Quotation Marks). Generally, when you submit a phrase containing numerous words
into a search engine, the computer will attempt to match as many of the terms as feasible.
This is effective if you are unsure about what you desire.
If you searched for 'funny moment Billy Madison comedy,' you were probably
looking for a collection of humorous scenes in general. On the other hand, if you search
for '"I award you no points, and may God have compassion on your soul"', you can be
certain that you will come across information concerning a very specific scene.
Range of Numbers
.. (Two Periods). This operator translates as 'between' and is always used in conjunction
with numbers. It's a pretty useful shortcut if you're looking for something within a specific
timeframe or price range. By typing 'Cars $10,000... $30,0000' into the search field, only
sites concerning cars in that price range should be returned.
Wild Card
* (Asterisk). The asterisk symbol is typically rendered as 'wildcard' in most computer
software. As the name implies, wildcards are placeholders for any word or phrase. This
is especially beneficial if you've forgotten a word or phrase in its entirety.
If you're looking for the name of a song that begins with the word 'happy' and ends
with the phrase 'to you,' you could try searching Google for 'happy * to you'. And then
you'd have that beautiful Eureka! moment when you realized the word on the tip of your
tongue was 'birthday.'
DEFINITIONS
Searching “define:” with a colon and the term, you are looking for will return the
definition of the word. Additionally, you can search for synonyms using the syntax
synonym: [keyword].
SPECIFIC SITE SEARCH
If you searched for: foxes, you came to the following website:
nationalgeographic.com. Using the term "site" followed by a colon will search for foxes on
the specified website.
Because the site operator modifies searches and requires an additional
parameter, it is classified as an advanced search operator. This additional option is a
domain name in this scenario.

3. Advanced search
An advance search is a feature of a search engine like Google that give the user
the ability to customize the searching process. You can select where you want to get your
result (for example you only want results coming from the Philippines). You can also filter
out the information you do not need.
How to Do a Google Advanced Search using your Smartphone
a. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app
.
b. Go to an Advanced Search page by typing one of the following URL below depending
on what kind of material you are looking for (Website, Images, Videos, or Books):
• Websites and files: google.com/advanced_search
• Images: google.com/advanced_image_search
• Videos: google.com/advanced_video_search
• Books: google.com/advanced_book_search
Note: After typing one of the URLs, you can already customize your search based on your
liking. If you want to add “Advanced Search” on your home screen, follow the steps below.
c. While you are in the advanced search window, at the top right of the screen, tap
More
Add to Home screen
Add.
d. Drag the icon to your Home screen or tap Add automatically.
Use Advanced Search Query Fields
Important: Search query fields can vary across Advanced Search pages. In
Advanced Search, you can choose words or phrases to include or remove from your
results. You can choose:
• “All these words”: Results use all the words you enter.
• “This exact word or phrase”: Results include one exact word or phrase you
enter.
• “Any of these words”: Results include at least one of the words you enter.

“None of these words”: Results don’t have any of the words you enter.
“Numbers ranging from”: Results include a number between the 2 numbers
you enter.

4. Look for credible source
One of the skills these generation needs to develop is the ability to get credible
information from the internet. We are aware that we are living in Information Age where
information is a vital part of our daily life. The internet is widely used as information source
since it is easy to use and gives fast response any time and almost anywhere. But there
are also risks in using information from the internet. Not all information found on the
internet are true or reliable.
Before using information from the internet, we can use the CRAP Test. The CRAP
test is a method for evaluating research based on the following criteria: Currency,
Reliability, Authority, and Purpose/Point of View.

Ask yourself the following questions when evaluating research source materials:
a. Currency:
• How recent is the information? How recently has the website/information been
updated? Is the research current enough for your topic, or is it outdated?
b. Reliability:
• What kind of information is included in the resource? Is it based on facts and
statistics, or is it “padded” with large vocabulary but really has no substance?
• Is the content of the source based primarily in opinion? Is the author’s argument
balanced, showing both sides of an issue? Does the author address other ideas
that are opposed to his/her own?
•
Does the author provide references or research sources for data and/or quotations
that they use? Does the author evaluate those sources, or does he/she use them
at will without questioning the validity?
c. Authority
• Who is the creator/author?
•
What are his/her credentials? Does the author possess “authority” to speak and/or
write about their topic? (For example, a doctor would not have the “authority” to
talk about the field of education because he/she doesn’t have personal, relevant
experience in the field of education, even though he/she would have plenty of
experience in the medical field) Don’t assume just because an author has a Ph.D.
or a distinguished title that they are a reliable resource for you and your purposes
for writing.
•
Who is the publisher and/or sponsor of the research?
•
Is the author and/or publisher reputable?
•
What is the publisher’s interest (if any) in this information? Does it make sense
that this particular publisher would endorse such research?
•
Are there advertisements on the website? If so, chances are it’s not a reliable
source because it’s receiving its funding through private donors, which lends itself
to biased information that is presented.
d. Purpose/Point of View:
• Is the research source fact or opinion? Is it biased? Is the creator/author trying to
sell you something?
You can also check the URL of the website. A website that ends in .com is
intended to be a commercial website and may be slanted to promoting a product or
service. In most cases, .edu websites are best for research as government and
organization websites may have a tendency to make information favorable for them.
Unfortunately, not all websites follow the standards in domain name conventions.
Some sites use the suffix like .com loosely; some sites are not credible even though they
use a .edu suffix. The table below are other domain name suffixes:

5. Give credit
If you are going to use the information from a source for educational purposes, give
credits to the original author of the page or information. To properly cite a reference, you
may use the format below:
1. Name of the person or organization (the author of the information)
2. Title of the home page in italics (title is shown in title bar but is sometimes missing or
unrelated).
3. URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
4. Date last seen

Copyright Infringement is the unauthorized use of works protected by copyright law for
a purpose for which such authorization is necessary.
Copyright infringement is penalized in the Philippines by the following:

For the first offense, the penalty is between one and three years in prison and a fine of
between 50,000 and 150,000 pesos.
For the second crime, the penalty ranges from three years and one day to six years in prison
with a fine of between 150,000 and 500,000 pesos.
