Plan and Design Labs
The following cases are provided for which you will plan and design an experiment to assist the
investigation.
1. Students have been given four brands of black-ink permanent marker: Brands A, B, C and D. They
are also provided with key information that the dyes being permanent will not be soluble in water.
They are required to plan and design an experiment to determine if the black inks from these four
permanent markers contain the same dyes.
2. Scientists have invented a new solid, nicknamed X-24, which can catalyse the decomposition of
hydrogen peroxide. They are however having problems determining the effect of temperature on
the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide using X-24 as the catalyst and it seems that as temperature
increases, the rate of decomposition decreases. Plan and design and experiment to determine the
effect of temperature on the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide using X-24, provided that you
are given 50 grams of the solid to conduct the experiment.
