Hello everyone my name is Burak I study mechanical engineering and today I will be talking about
one my favourite MMA fights of all time. It is the UFC middleweight championship bout that was
fought between Israel Adesanya and Sean Strickland. So mma is an abbreviation of mixed martial arts
and it is a sport where two athletes compete using a variety of fighting techniques such as grappling
wrestling and striking. It is a modern version of the ancient greek olypmic sport pankretion. UFC is
the biggest mma promotion, it is what NBA is to basketball. This fight between Adesanya and
Strickland was the main event in UFC 293. Adesanya was the middleweight champion and many
considered him one of the best strikers that ever fought in the UFC. Strickland was regarded as a
good striker but many believed he had no chance against Adesanya. Adesanya was the betting
favourite by a big margin. In the fight however Adesanya got dropped in the first round, and
strickland outstruck him throughout the fight. Now I would like to Show you a graph which explains
this outcome. It’s a bar chart that I made using the data from ufc.com and the x axis shows the last
five opponents of Adesanya and the y axis shows his striking accuracy in percentage. As you can see
until he fights Strickland Adesanya’s accuracy was always near 50%. But in his fight against Strickland
his accuracy dropped significantly to a all time low at 34%. This is no consequence however and it is a
result of the technique Strickland uses: it is called the Philly Shell. It is a technique most famously
used by the boxer Floyd Mayweather.
