class today?
Thank you! I’m glad that you are all present
today.
B. Review/Recall
Let’s have a quick recap of our previous lesson. What
did we discuss last time?
Yes, Mr. Hizon?
We discussed about Expository Essay.
Good job! What are the types of essays that we tackled
there?
Yes, Mercado?
The types of essays tackled are narrative essay,
argumentative essay, descriptive essay, and expository
essays.
Very good! How about this one, it is an essay that
presents or provides information about a particular
topic or issue. What type of essay is this?
Yes, Dela Cruz?
Good job! Can you also give me the four key
structural elements in an expository essay?
Yes, Francisco?
It is an expository essay, Ma’am.
The four key structural elements in an expository essay
are thesis statement, transition, body, and conclusion.
Excellent! You all remembered the key points very
well. Now, let's move on to the fun part of our lesson.
C. Presentation/Motivation
I have a question, what is your usual routine during
your AP class?
Yes, Villojan?
We have a news-sharing activity.
That’s right! You are tasked to watch or read news and
you have to write it down in your notebook and share
it with your classmates.
As a student, what do you think is the benefit of
watching or reading the news and sharing it with your
classmates?
Yes, Francisco?
We become aware of what is happening around us.
That’s right. Another?
Yes, Buclatin?
Sharing news with our classmates helped us to be
informed.
Very good. It is important as a student because
according to Francisco and Buclatin, we became
aware and informed of happenings around us.
Now, I have here an activity called FRAME OF
REALITY.
I will present a picture that is about the social issues
in the Philippines. I will call two names to share their
interpretation of the picture.
Integration: Araling Panlipunan
Now, May I call on Ms. Gambalan. Can you share The picture is about the jeepney phaseout that a lot of
your interpretation in the picture?
people don’t agree with this because jeepney drivers,
operators, and commuters are really affected by this.
It’s good to hear that you are somehow aware of
the social issues here in our country. Thank you
for that.
How about you, Ms. Acebedo?
Just like what Gambalan said it’s about the jeepney
phaseout that the government wants to modernize and
make it more environmentally friendly for everyone.
Well done, everyone!
So, to summarize all of your answers, the picture
is about the jeepney phaseout, but many people
disagree with the plan. It makes life hard for both
the drivers and the commuters.
Now, I want to ask, as a student, why is it
important to be aware of the social issues in the
Philippines?
Yes, Almadin?
As a student, knowing about social issues in the
Philippines is important because it helps us understand the
problems people face.
That’s right! We become understanding about the
problems or challenges that other people
experienced.
Now, because these are social issues, and when
the problems are discussed, we hear a lot of
opinions from other people, right?
Then, why is it important to listen to different
opinions when understanding social issues in the
Philippines?
Yes, Ms. Dela Cruz?
That’s right! Even if we are entitled to our
opinion, it is really important to listen to different
points of view or perspectives of other people.
Thank you so much, Ms. Dela Cruz.
II.
DEVELOPMENT
A. Pre-test
Before we begin our discussion, let's start with a pretest. Please get your notebook and number it from 1 to
5.
Listening to different opinions on social issues in the
Philippines helps us understand other perspectives and
find better solutions by considering everyone's ideas.
Directions: Read the questions carefully. Write
REAL if the statement is correct, FAKE if the
statement is wrong.
1. Opinion is sometimes based on fact. (Fake)
2. Opinions can change often and usually reflect
one person. (Real)
3. Assertion is defined as a view, judgment, or
appraisal drawn from facts. (Fake)
4. An assertion is usually subjective, mostly
with no support or pieces of evidence. (Real)
5. Assertion is a confident and forceful
statement of fact or belief. (Real)
ICT Integration
Okay, let us all start answering. If you’re going to
answer, please come in front and then click your
answer here. Anyone, who wants to answer?
Yes, Rizaga. What is your answer?
The answer for number one is fake, Ma’am.
Correct! Next, Mercado.
The answer for number two is real.
Right! How about you, Villojan?
The answer for number three is fake.
Excellent! Yes, Mr. Hizon?
The answer for number four is real.
Thank you! Last one. Yes, Mr. Luchavez?
The answer for number five is also real.
Good job, everyone!
B. Discussion
Now, let us proceed with our discussion. To know about
our lesson for today, let’s have first the DECODING
CHALLENGE.
Decode the missing letters using alphabetical order to
guess the correct word. All you have to do is to guess a
word by decoding the missing letters using alphabetical
order.
A=1, B=2, C=3…so on.
Do you get it?
(Students will answer.)
Example:

Yes, Almadin?
It’s A, S, E, R, I, and N.
What words is that?
Assertion.
S

T
19 5 18
O

= ASSERTION
14
Correct! Now, what do you think is our lesson for today?
Opinion and Assertion.
Good job, everyone!
Let’s read first our learning objective for today, who
wants to read?
Yes, Ms. Bernis.
At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
 differentiate statements of fact, opinion, and
assertion;
 apply their understanding of opinions and
assertions by creating a slogan, poster, Venn
diagram, poetry, performing a role-play; and
 appreciate the importance of awareness of social
issues in the Philippines by giving statements of
opinion and assertion.
Thank you so much!
I know you already have ideas about facts and opinion, am
I right?
Yes, so when we say fact, what do we mean by this?
It is objective, Ma’am.
Yes, Mr. Ilagan?
Okay, it is objective because it is based on facts.
What else? Yes, Mr. Dimapilis?
Excellent! It can be true and proven with evidence.
Anyone who wants to read?
Yes, Mr. Dolor?
Fact
A fact can be true and proven.
A fact is a statement that can be verified. It can be proven
to be true or false through objective evidence.
Thank you. So, all your answers are correct. We know that
already when we say fact, it can be verified by factual
evidence.
Let’s have an example:
Who wants to read?
Yes, Recto?

Your adviser is Mr. Emerson Liwag.
(Students will answer.)
Is it true that Mr. Emerson Liwag is your adviser?
Okay. How about the next example?
Yes, Dela Cruz?

Hizon is one of the active students in our class.
Agree, Ma’am.
Dela Cruz, do you agree or disagree?
Okay, thank you so much.
Do you have any questions?
None, Ma’am.
Okay, let’s proceed to the next one.
Who wants to read?
Okay, kindly read Ms. Incognito.
Opinion
An opinion is defined as a view, judgment, or appraisal
drawn from facts. It is usually a concept or impression
based on factual evidence. Opinions can change often and
usually reflect one person.
Thank you so much.
Based on the definition of opinion, what is your
understanding of it?
Yes, Roldan?
Okay, based on the definition it is a view or judgment that
is drawn from facts. Meaning, that you’re looking first at
facts before you form a judgment to support your idea.
Let’s have an example:
It comes from looking at facts and forming a judgment.
Who wants to read?
Yes, Ms. Gutierez?

Chocolate ice cream is the most delicious flavor.
Why do you think it is opinion?
Because not all people like chocolate ice cream flavor.
Okay, good job! Also, if you’re going to ask a child what
their favorite flavor of ice cream is, they will
automatically say chocolate.
Thank you so much.
Next example, please read.
Yes, Mr. Reyes?

Summer is the most enjoyable season because of
the warm weather.
Okay, why do you think it is opinion?
It is opinion because not all people like summer.
Right! Summer is not for everyone, that’s why it is
opinion because for other people they want a warmth
weather while the others do not.
You get it? Do you have any questions so far?
None, Ma’am
Okay, let’s proceed to the next.
Who wants to read?
Yes, Mr. Rodriguez?
Assertion
A declaration or expression for strong belief towards a
particular topic, often without evidence. It usually
includes forceful or confident and positive statements
regarding a belief or a fact. In contrast to an opinion, an
assertion, which is usually subjective, expresses
vindication, mostly with no support or pieces of evidence.
What is your understanding of Assertion?
Yes, Ms. Dela Cruz?
That’s right! As you can see opinion and assertion have
the same thing.
An assertion is like saying something with a lot of
confidence, like you really believe it, but you might not
have proof.
Now, let's talk about Assertion.
It is like when you really believe in something and you say
it with a lot of confidence, that’s assertion. No one can
change your mind because you are firm with your belief.
Also, the thing about assertions is that they don't always
come with proof or evidence. It's like saying something is
true just because you believe it strongly. So, if I say, 'I'm
the fastest person in the world,' without any proof, that's
an assertion. I might really believe it, but I haven't shown
any evidence that it's true.
Do you get it?
(Students will answer.)
Let’s have an example:
Who wants to read?
Yes, Mr. Buclatin?

No man is an island.
Mr. Buclatin, why do you think the example is an It is an assertion because "No man is an island" is a strong
statement, it says people are connected and need each
assertion?
other, not alone like islands.
Okay, thank you. So, it can be, right? Many people love
to be alone, and people tend to be independent. That’s why
not all people believe they need someone in their life.
Another example.
Yes, Ms. Bernis?

Exercise is the key to a long and healthy life.
How about this one, why do you think it is assertion?
Yes, Mr. Hizon?
It is assertion because they strongly believe that exercise
is the key to a long and healthy life which in fact it is not
just about exercise.
Okay, that’s right! We have a lot of things to do to have a
long and healthy lifestyle, so it is not just about doing
exercise.
Do you have any questions?
Let’s have other examples and try to guess if the following
examples are opinions or assertions.

An apple a day keeps the doctors away.
None, Ma’am.
What do you think is this?
Yes, Ms. Incognito?
Assertion, Ma’am.
Correct! Why do you think it is assertion?
Because it is a strong and confident claim about the health
benefits of eating an apple daily.
Good job! It doesn’t mean that if you eat a lot of apples
you won’t need to visit a doctor.

I think apples are the tastiest fruit because they're
sweet, juicy, and easy to snack on.
What do you think is this?
Yes, Ms. Diapera?
It is an opinion, Ma’am.
Why did you classify that as an opinion?
It's an opinion because the person is sharing their own
thoughts about apples being the tastiest fruit based on their
personal preferences.
Okay, good job!
Let’s have other examples here for you to try to familiarize
yourself with opinions and assertions.

General Trias has the best educational institutions
in Cavite. (Assertion)
What do you think is this? Yes, Mr. Ilagan?
It is assertion, Ma’am.
Okay, correct. Why do you think so?
Because there’s no evidence why the General Trias has
the best educational institutions in Cavite.
Okay, thank you so much.

Living in General Trias is more peaceful than in
other parts of Cavite. (Opinion)
How about this one? Yes, Ms. Acebedo?
Excellent! Thank you.
Okay, thank you so much.
C. Activity
Now, I know all of you are ready for our activity. Let’s
have a board work.
Let’s read first the directions.
It is an opinion, Ma’am. Because the person stated his/her
experience of living in General Trias that is more peaceful
than in other parts of Cavite.
Yes, Mr. Rodriguez.
Directions: Read and analyze the sentences provided.
Identify if the sentences are OPINION or ASSERTION
then briefly explain your answer.
1. Students agreed to stop bullying in
school to make it a safe and happy place
for everyone. (Assertion)
2. The Philippines has a rich cultural
heritage that should be preserved and
celebrated. (Opinion)
For number one we have Ms. Villojan.
The answer is Assertion, because even if the students stop
the bullying, it doesn’t mean that the school is already safe
and happy place for everyone.
That is a great observation! Even if the bullying stop, it
doesn’t mean that the school is safe and happy pace
because it is still depending on the environment of the
school.
Thank you, Ms. Villojan. Next, we have Ms. Espineli.
The answer is opinion, Ma’am. Because it is true that we
have a rich cultural heritage, but other people do not
preserve nor appreciate the cultural heritage we have in
the Philippines.
That’s right! One example of that is the traditional
craftsmanship and artistry of indigenous communities.
Thank you so much for your participation.
