Ar t Models 2
Features
O
ur first book in this series “Art Models” generated a lot of discussion and suggestions. A
few people told us not to photograph poses that
are based on famous works of art. Many others
suggested we look to the classics for inspiration.
After all, they reasoned, if you are posing the human body as an art reference, what better inspiration than existing works of art? This is one of
the thoughts behind the selection of poses you
see here in Art Models 2.
For each pose, we have included an
information box with notes about the
piece we were thinking of when we instructed the model. When available,
we include the artist, an approximate date for the piece and a
location where you can view it.
These details are not definitive,
we simply wanted to share with
you
the source of inspiration for the pose selection
and give you the opportunity to see how similar poses were used in existing pieces of art.
One thing that makes a work of art “classic” is that it evokes emotion. We were
fortunate to find a talented group of
models who were willing and able to
display emotions for the length of an
entire rotation (see, for example, Jesse’s “Struggle” on page 30 and Susan’s
“Liberty Leading the People” on page
108). This is something that seems
to be uncommon in other pose
books and even in live classes, but
we think emotion is essential to art
10
and it was important to capture those emotions
for your study. We hope you are pleased with their
efforts and that their work will inspire you.
In response to numerous requests for a proportional reference, we added the Vitruvian pose
inspired by Da Vinci’s famous “Vitruvian Man.”
The end of each chapter provides a full-page anatomical reference for each model.
Companion Disk
To help you quickly find the poses
from the book on the disk, the information box that accompanies
each pose also has a disk symbol
with a name beside it. That
name refers to the folder on disk
for the pose. We also note the
folder names for those poses that
have overhead views.
The disk has 24 high-resolution
photos of every pose, one photo every 15-degrees in rotation around the
model. It also has some bonus material
that just did not fit in the book. For
example, the disk has some photos
taken from overhead looking down
on the model, all 24 views of each
“Vitruvian” and two additional
bonus poses.
Companion Disk Instructions
The book shows 4 photos for each pose. The
disk has 24 photos in high resolution for every
pose, over 1500 photos. The average size is
about 4.5 megapixels.
Steps for viewing the photos
1. Put the Companion Disk in your disk
drive.
2. Browse to the drive as you would any
data disk.
3. Open the folder containing the pose you
want to see.
4. Open any photo by double-clicking it.
We hope you find Art Models 2 to be genuinely
useful and a valuable addition to your artist’s
toolkit. If you have any suggestions, thoughts or
comments, we’d love to hear from you.

In the book the
poses have 4 views.
On the disk every
pose has 24 views
in high resolution.
This page shows a small
preview of the photos
for just one pose. Each
of these 24 photos is
actually as large as the
one on the facing page.
We put them on disk
rather than in the book
because to print them
all at full size would
have taken 1,500 pages!

Production Notes
Some poses are repeated by several models. We do
this not just to show the difference in body structure but also to demonstrate the sometimes subtle
differences each model injects into the pose. One
example of this is the tilt of the head and position
of hands in the pose “Isolation” by Shandra and
Jesse. In each case, we try to give the model the
same instruction. Variations in the pose are then
an expression of each model’s personality. We hope
this gives some insight into the different ways one
can express emotion through body position.
◊
◊
◊
One of our primary design goals was to make the
photos in the book as large as possible. This makes
for a less consistent layout than our previous book.
When we designed Art Models, we thought people
would use the book as an index into the Companion Disk and view the photos at full size on their
computers. But, many people told us they wanted
to work directly from the book. That being the
case, we judged larger photos at the expense of a
consistent layout to be a worthwhile trade-off.
◊
◊
The following Index is divided into categories; first
by position, then by Artist and finally by the title
of the work that suggested the pose.

Another change from Art Models is the lack of
screening in this book. We received so many complaints and cries of ‘censoring’ regarding the blurring in AM1 that we decided to leave the photos
untouched for this book. This is a risk, as it may
cause the book not to be stocked in certain venues.
This book is clearly an art reference and should be
viewed in the same light as anatomy books are for
medical students. But, to many people, there is still
a strong bias against nudity and we felt it warranted
a mention.

Books On Disk
The art models series provides hundreds of poses with a wide variety of models, lighting, and styles. Each book has a different focus,
for example Art Models 2 showcases classically inspired poses, the
poses in Art Models 3 are the favorites as chosen by our customers
and the first Art Models has a broad selection of poses printed in a
smaller format.
Books On Disk (BOD) offer the complete print book in ebook format
plus the entire Companion Disk all in one convenient and affordable
package. All of the poses from the book are shown from 24 angles in
high resolution, providing thousands of finely detailed photos. Zoom
