Recall a scene from the film, watch and relate it to the following topics:
1. Utilitarianism, Deontology, Virtue Ethics
The scene inside the car when the male reporter was offered a bribe by the
daughter of Jaime Santillan in exchange of his silence regarding the corruptions and
crimes happening in their society.
The reporter named Vince Sandoval was called by Beatrice Sandoval, the
daughter of Jaime Santillan who leads their province. He was offered a bribe for him
to keep silent and ignore the investigation regarding the corruptions and crimes in
their place. Vince was a reporter who is loyal to his work. He uses his voice to speak
for the weak and powerless people. Duty and responsibility was his priority. He does
not hesitate to fight for what is right even his life would be at risk. In my point of view,
this shows utilitarianism. His actions was right for it produces the greatest good for
the greatest number of people. No second thoughts came to his mind as he reveal
the truth for the sake of the people in their community. This also shows deontology.
No offers would shaken and mislead him to the wrong path. He abide by laws and
regulations he oath to do. He acts according to his principles. I can say that he puts
his duty above than his safety. This scene also encompasses virtue ethics. Vince
embodies a character of honesty and bravery. With this, he makes the right choice as
he faced the challenges in his life and work. This reflects that he has a role in their
society. He functions for the good that brings safety to people. His actions where just
accurate to what he must function. He does not exceed nor lack of help to his family
and people.
2. Is there a need for all of us to have an ethical framework? Support your
answer.
Framework is defined as a structure, plan, or system, as of concepts, values,
customs, or rules. Having ethical framework is needed for us to be guided in the
future decisions or circumstances we may encounter. Ethical framework is like our todo-list of schoolwork. It helps us stay organized and focus on what actions we must
do in order to reach our goals. This helps us ensure that the actions and decisions
we make will remain having the good purpose and result to greatest good. Ethical
framework can be our outline to follow whenever we encounter ethical dilemma. It is
the structure that builds a foundation of our character and behavior. Having ethical
framework reduces the risk of failure. If there will be no ethical framework, people
may act on whatever ways they want which then may harm others.
