Thermal energy is the energy that comes from the temperature of matter. The hotter the substance, the more is the vibration of molecules and hence the higher is the thermal energy. 2-Component 1- Evaporator 2- Condencer 3- Turbine 4- Generator 5- pump Block diagram 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑚 𝐴𝑚𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑎 𝑁𝐻 Turbine Generator Electrical Energy 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑚 Evaporator Condenser 𝑀𝑖𝑥𝑒𝑑 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 16℃ 𝐿𝑖𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑑 pump Cold 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 5℃ pump 𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 25℃ pump Advantages of OTEC system 1.This plant can supply steady power without any fluctuation. 2. This plant needs very less no of equipment. 3. The plant can be constructed on the shoreline or on floating platform. 4. The plant of any size and capacity can be constructed at a suitable site. 5. Clean source of energy. Disadvantages of OTEC system 1- Low efficiency 2- High installation cost 3- Maintenance hazards 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃 = 8𝑀𝑊 𝑇 = 25 ℃ 𝑇 = 5℃ 𝑆. ℎ = 4200𝐽/kg-k 𝜌 P= ∴Q= = 1026𝑘𝑔/𝑚 𝑄 = ??
