IV. Anchoring procedure
IV.1. Preparation before anchoring
Most of the time anchorage is performed in order to wait for port entrance in a dedicated safe area.
Anchors may be also used to berth the vessel alongside, to maneuver the vessel in narrow spaces, and in case
of emergency to stop the vessel.
The anchor position is fixed by Port Authorities or Master who will plan the approach of anchorage area. The
Master stills responsible for anchoring operation.
The anchoring team is advised in due time and informed which anchor to be used and how many shackles to be
paid out.
The Chief engineer is also advised in due time according to his instructions.
The Officer on watch will take all dispositions according to the check-list here enclosed. Actions taken referring
to this list will be recorded in the bridge log book.
All anchoring team must be called to the bridge for briefing by the Master.
All anchoring team must be gathered on the forward anchoring/mooring station before starting any operation.
Only personnel involved in anchoring operations should be present at mooring stations during anchoring
operations.
Inexperienced personnel such as cadets in the early stages of their training, who are to be involved in anchoring
operations should be under the supervision and direction of an experienced seafarer.

IV.2. The watch at anchorage
Watch organization
Except special orders from Master, same dispositions are applied as for ocean navigation watch: dead man
alarm system used during daylight and calling helmsman if necessary.
The officer on watch must notify the Master if:

Visibility deteriorates,
Any other doubtful situation (VHF calls, change of planning for cargo operations…) and according to
Master’s orders.
In all circumstances the fact of warning the Master does not exonerate the Officer of the Watch from taking

Getting underway remains under the Master’s responsibility with or without pilot contribution (according to local
