Reading Comprehension Strategy: Concept Anchoring Routine Appropriate Grade Level: 7th-12th grades Procedures/Steps: * 3 Components: 1.) The Anchoring Table – tie new information into what we already know by writing down what we already know about a certain concept, then adding the new information, and finally adding how the two areas can be linked 2.) The Linking Steps – This is a guide for teachers to go by that helps to lead the class discussion about known and new information, and how to fill in the table 3.) Cue-Do-Review Sequence – Cue: prepares students(anticipatory set), Do: follow linking steps to fill in the table, Review: cover key content. Known Concept Shared New Concept Earth Part of - Solar System The sun Earth rotates - Rotation Around sun Seasons from rotation - Axis on axis Earth is part - 8 Planets of the 8 Linking Steps: Announce new concept Name known concept Collect known information Highlight characteristics of both Compare State understandings of new concept Comments and/or Tips: The first couple of times a teacher gives this to their students, they should help them fill it out. This lets students actually see the similarities between the new and the know information. This helps students distinguish what is the important information and what is not.
