Themes
Poems
Reflection
Childhood Memories
● Mi Primera
Inspiración (1874)
● Un Recuerdo A Mi
Pueblo (1876)
The theme together with the
corresponding poems reflect a
nationalistic perspective even
though Rizal was just in his
formative years. It was in a
nationalistic
perspective
because of how he gave
importance to where he
rooted from, just as he
honored his mother and his
hometown. It reflects on his
nationalistic
character
towards our country. He was
influenced by his experiences
as he was also bullied when
he entered Ateneo. This leads
him
to
create
poems
remembering the people and
the place which he came
from.
Perceptions on Education
● Por la Educación
Recibe Lustre la
Patria (1876)
● Alianza Íntima Entre
la Religión y la Buena
Educación (1876)
Both
nationalistic
and
pro-Spanish perspectives are
reflected from the theme with
the corresponding poems.
Although education is the
subject of Rizal in both
poems, we can infer that the
Jesuits influenced him on
how important education is. It
reflects nationalistic in a way
he wants to use education to
alleviate the situation of the
country over domination. So,
it is a combination of both
perspectives. His stay within
Ateneo influenced him which
can be seen in the poems.
Religion
● Al Nino Jesus (1875)
● A La Virgen Maria
(1876)
This reflects a pro-Spanish
perspective because of the
theme — religion. We all
know that the Spaniards
brought Christianity in our
country which influenced us
even up to this day. Rizal was
influenced by the religion and
since he was in Ateneo, he
was also influenced by the
Jesuits. In addition, his mom
values religion which Rizal
followed
and
being
influenced with. This became
the reason for the subject of
these poems.
Heroism
● El Heroísmo De
Colon (1877)
● El Combate:
Urbiztondo, Terror De
Jolo (1875)
The two poems are different
in terms of how it reflects
heroism which makes it
nationalistic and pro-Spanish
perspective. El Heroísmo De
Colon
(1877)
is
in
pro-Spanish
perspective
because of how it portrays the
discovery of the Philippines
through Ferdinand Magellan.
Somehow,
it
portrays
colonialism yet Rizal creates
a different interpretation in a
sense of heroism. While, El
Combate: Urbiztondo, Terror
De Jolo (1875) is more
nationalistic approach as it
portrays how Urbiztondo
fights against Muslim. They
fight for their land which
explains the essence of being
a nationalistic. Rizal was
influenced by his liking for
history.
His
interest
influenced him to write these
poems.
Nationalism
● A La Juventud
Filipina (1879)
Based on the theme and
poems presented, it reflected
● The Philippines
(1880)
a nationalistic perspective.
These are the years where he
started to become more
prevalent against the rotten
colonial system of Spain. He
urged Filipinos, especially the
youth to fight for our
fatherland. The youth was
also mentionef to be the
"future" of this nation. His
experiences influenced him to
write these poems as he
experienced discrimination
and the real situation of
Filipinos in their homeland
during that time.
