Lego or Block Building Group Work Activity Facilitate social skills, communication, problem solving, sharing, turn taking and more in a fun, engaging group activity! Materials & Instructions Materials Needed: – Blocks (Legos work great but really you can use any type of blocks) – Job assignment Cards – Group(s) of 3-4 students (although 2 can work as well!) – Reflection prompts visual or Reflection Sheets – Group Task cards (optional) Instructions: 1. Instruct students that they will be working together to build something and that each student will have a specific job. 2. Explain all jobs to all students, and let them know that they will have a chance to try out each. 3. Review the reflection questions with students ahead of time to get them thinking. 4. Allow students to randomly pick (or you can assign) a job. This works best with 3-4 students. If 3 students, take out the Director card. If you only have 2 students, the teacher can assume one role. 5. Review jobs again with each student once assigned. 6. Optional step: If students have trouble coming up with ideas of what to build, you can let them pick an optional “Group task” card. I most often do NOT use these. 7. Set a time for 5 minutes or longer, and let students assume their roles. The student who is the supplier should get the actual Legos. 8. Prompt students along the way in their roles. 9. After 5 minutes, ask students to reflect on the following questions, using the reflection sheets if you choose. 10. Allow students to switch to different roles as time allows Job assignment: Job assignment: Builder Supplier Job description: Job description: • • • • • Listen to the Architect for directions Take blocks from the Supplier Build the structure • Hold the box of blocks Listen to the Architect for which blocks you will need to take out.
