Dyes: Nowadays Hair dye is commonly used as a globally accepted cosmetic products for young generations. Coloring of hair is performed not only by professionals but also a popular cosmetic procedure at home. Hair is made up of root and shaft. Shaft has three layers: Cuticle made of tightly packed colorless cells, cortex contains natural color pigments that determine color and medulla a hollow core. Coloring agents remove natural color or add new color or accomplish both. For permanent color, the product should penetrate the cuticle to deposit or remove color in the cortex. Earlier natural hair dyes were used but now, due to advancement in cosmetic industry, different types have been developed. Three types available are temporary dyes containing large molecules too big to penetrate and only coat the shaft. The semi-permanent with small molecules containing aromatic amines, cause swelling of shaft, raise the cuticle and allow it to enter the cortex thus coloring it. The oxidative dyes are permanent with smallest molecules.[1] The aromatic amines swell the cuticle and allows hydrogen peroxide and the dye to penetrate the cortex which removes color and lightens the hair which lasts until the hair grows out.[2] Hair dyes protect from environmental factor Our tresses are exposed every day to daily environmental factors including polluted air, dust, dirt, excessive heat and temperature changes among others. When you get your hair coloured, you get a protective layer which protects your natural hair from these environmental hazards. Following modern trends, people have begun to dye their hair at increasingly earlier ages, exposing them to strongly sensitizing substances that can potentially increase the risk of allergic reactions via many possible routes. The European Union (EU) Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP) foresees the banning of all permanent and non-permanent hair dyes for which the industry has not submitted a safety file for added substances that the SCCP has deemed as chemicals of interest since Lotion and Serum There are many uses of serum for hair. These include reducing frizz, detangling it, and providing it with additional hydration and nourishment that makes your hair feel strong and healthy. Hair serums also help deflect environmental pollutants when you step out and thus protect your hair. Hair serum is a styling product that coats the surface of your hair. It’s made with a base of silicone, a rubber-like substance that sits on top of your strands. There are different types of hair serums for different hair goals. Depending on the product’s formula, a hair serum might reduce frizz, add shine, or straighten your hair. Some formulas may also protect against various forms of damage. References: M. Gupta et al.
