Fabulous 50s
Preview Collage
Directions: Use online resources to learn more about the 1950s and make a
collage representing the decade . Find and label images of the following:
Two famous rock'n roll musicians of the time
A 1950s suburb
A drive-in movie theater
Two 1950s television show
A beatnik
A Normal Rockwell painting
A vintage 1950s image from your town or state
A magazine ad from the era
A housewife from the time
A 1950s Era Automobile
While simply typing some words into google images might be a place to
start, you will need to read and learn about the images and subjects in
order to make sure the website is reputable and to create an accurate
caption.
Other Requirements:
-You must credit your sources for both the images and the information in the
captions by creating a list of sources on the back of your collage
-Each image needs a one sentence caption. You must also be able to answer
basic questions about the images you choose for your collage.

This project can be used in a variety of ways. It can be completed in small groups, in
pairs, or individually. It was designed to be done by students who are just beginning to
learn about the fifties, or previewing the material, but, for lower level students, it could
also be used as a unit assessment.
With this collage, students will learn about the post war era, new developments in
technology and communications, and changes in pop culture.
The common core ELA History/Social Studies Standards that this project addresses are:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.7
Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and
media (e.g., visually, quantitatively, as well as in words) in order to address a question or
solve a problem.
and
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.9
Integrate information from diverse sources, both primary and secondary, into a
coherent understanding of an idea or event, noting discrepancies among sources.
