Amos 1:1
1 The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa—the vision he saw concerning Israel two years
before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash[a] was king of
Israel.
Amos 1:3 This is what the Lord says:“For three sins of Damascus, even for four, I will not relent.
Amos 1:6 This is what the Lord says:“For three sins of Gaza, even for four, I will not relen

the Lord and have not kept his decrees,because they have been led astray by false gods,[b]

Judgment on Israel
Amos 2:6-8
This is what the Lord says:“For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not relent.They sell the
innocent for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals.7 They trample on the heads of the poor as
on the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed.Father and son use the same girl
and so profane my holy name.8 They lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge.
In the house of their god they drink wine taken as fines.
1 Peter 4:16-18
16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that
name. 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household; and if it begins with us, what will
the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And,“If it is hard for the righteous to
be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”[a]

Golden Calves at Bethel and Dan
25 Then Jeroboam fortified Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. From there he went
out and built up Peniel.[c]26 Jeroboam thought to himself, “The kingdom will now likely revert to the
house of David. 27 If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem, they
will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to
King Rehoboam.”28 After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, “It
is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of
Egypt.” 29 One he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan. 30 And this thing became a sin; the people
came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other.[d]31 Jeroboam built
shrines on high places and appointed priests from all sorts of people, even though they were not
Levites. 32 He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the festival held in
Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made.
And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made. 33 On the fifteenth day of the
eighth month, a month of his own choosing, he offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at Bethel. So
he instituted the festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to make offerings.
Amos 3:2-3
Hear this word, people of Israel, the word the Lord has spoken against you—against the whole family I
brought up out of Egypt:2 “You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth;therefore I will
punish you for all your sins.”
Genesis 12: 1-3
The Call of Abram
12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the
land I will show you.2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you;I will make your
name great, and you will be a blessing.[a]3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses
you I will curse;and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”[b]

Amos 5:18
The Day of the Lord
18 Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord!Why do you long for the day of the Lord?
That day will be darkness, not light.19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a
bear,as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite
him.20 Will not the day of the Lord be darkness, not light— pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?
21 “I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me.22 Even though you
bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them.Though you bring choice
fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them.23 Away with the noise of your songs! I will
not listen to the music of your harps.24 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a neverfailing stream!25 “Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, people of
Israel?26 You have lifted up the shrine of your king, the pedestal of your idols, the star of your
god[b]— which you made for yourselves.27 Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus,”
says the Lord, whose name is God Almighty.
Psalm 14:3-7
3 All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.4 Do
all these evildoers know nothing?They devour my people as though eating bread; they never call on
the Lord.5 But there they are, overwhelmed with dread, for God is present in the company of the
righteous.6 You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor, but the Lord is their refuge.7 Oh, that
salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the Lord restores his people, let Jacob rejoice

1 Corinthians 1:7-8
7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to
be revealed. 8 He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the
day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amos 5:4-6, 14-15
4 This is what the Lord says to Israel:“Seek me and live;5
do not seek Bethel,do not go
to Gilgal,
do not journey to Beersheba.For Gilgal will surely go into exile, and Bethel will be reduced to
nothing.[a]”6 Seek the Lord and live, or he will sweep through the tribes of Joseph like a fire;
it will devour them, and Bethel will have no one to quench it.
14Seek good, not evil, that you may live.Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you,
just as you say he is.15 Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts.Perhaps the Lord God
Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.
2 Kings 17:18-23
18 So the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them from his presence. Only the tribe of
Judah was left, 19 and even Judah did not keep the commands of the Lord their God. They followed the
practices Israel had introduced. 20 Therefore the Lord rejected all the people of Israel; he afflicted them
and gave them into the hands of plunderers, until he thrust them from his presence.
21 When he tore Israel away from the house of David, they made Jeroboam son of Nebat their
king. Jeroboam enticed Israel away from following the Lord and caused them to commit a great
sin. 22 The Israelites persisted in all the sins of Jeroboam and did not turn away from them 23 until
the Lord removed them from his presence, as he had warned through all his servants the prophets. So
the people of Israel were taken from their homeland into exile in Assyria, and they are still there.
2 Corinthians 6:14
Warning Against Idolatry
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in
common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?
Amos and Amaziah
Amos 7:10-17
10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent a message to Jeroboam king of Israel: “Amos is raising a
conspiracy against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words. 11 For this is
what Amos is saying:“‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile,
away from their native land.’”12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer! Go back to the
land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there. 13 Don’t prophesy anymore at
Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom.”14 Amos answered
Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care
of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the Lord took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to
my people Israel.’ 16 Now then, hear the word of the Lord. You say,“‘Do not prophesy against Israel,
and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac.’17 “Therefore this is what the Lord says:
“‘Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword.
Your land will be measured and divided up, and you yourself will die in a pagan[c] country.
And Israel will surely go into exile, away from their native land.’”
Psalm 73:6
6 Therefore pride serves as their necklace;Violence covers them like a garment.
Romans 3:22-24
22 This righteousness is given through faith in[a] Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference
between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are
justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
Israel’s Restoration
Amos 9:11-15
11 “In that day“I will restore David’s fallen shelter— I will repair its broken walls
and restore its ruins— and will rebuild it as it used to be,12 so that they may possess the
remnant of Edom and all the nations that bear my name,[e]”declares the Lord, who will do
these things.
13 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,“when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman
and the planter by the one treading grapes.New wine will drip from the mountains and flow from
all the hills,14 and I will bring my people Israel back from exile.[f]“They will rebuild the ruined
cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and
eat their fruit.15 I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I
have given them,”says the Lord your God.
Romans 15:11-13
11 And again,“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles; let all the peoples extol him.”[a]12 And again, Isaiah
says,“The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; in him the
Gentiles will hope.”[b]13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so
that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
