Men are XY and women are XX (The other 22 pairs are known as autosomal chromosomes.) It’s easy to see in the karyotype at the right that the X chromosome is quite larger than the Y, and therefore contains more genetic information. Sex linked traits are those that are located on the X chromosome. The implications of this are that for recessive disorders carried only on the X, men are more susceptible due to their single X chromosome. Women, on the other hand, have the possibility of being heterozygous and not expressing the disorder. In this case they will be called a carrier. Carriers have the genetic information for the disorder, and may pass it on to their children, though they do not express the disorder themselves. A sex linked trait is a trait determined by a gene that is carried only on the X chromosome 18. Men who inherit sex linked disorders always inherit it from the same parent. Is it the mom or the dad? How do you know? Men inherit sex linked traits from their mother, since they always receive their X chromosome from their mother and their Y chromosome from their father. ©Laney Lee 2020 thank you for your purchase!
