Quick tips for IB Examiners: How to raise academic misconduct exceptions in RM Assessor3 2019 © International Baccalaureate Organization 2019 International Baccalaureate ® | Baccalauréat International ® | Bachillerato Internacional ® Raising an exception in RM Assessor3 for suspected academic misconduct A new range of exception categories have been introduced for raising issues of suspected academic misconduct or school maladministration on RM Assessor. The screens that follow will introduce you to each of these new exception categories and provide you with guidance on selecting the most appropriate option when raising an exception. In all cases of suspected academic misconduct, examiners must mark the work without bias or making any adjustment for the suspected misconduct. Home / Worklist Raise new exception ! This exception relates to: Selected question criterion A Entire response I am raising an exception for the following reason: Academic misconduct – a) plagiarism The new exceptions can be raised for any form of assessment material whether it is coursework, examination, on-screen examination, artistic or oral assessment. The IB will investigate each exception raised. Any penalties/sanctions will be applied by the IB after the investigation process has been completed. Option A : Plagiarism This exception relates to: Selected question Criterion A Entire response I am raising an exception for the following reason: Academic misconduct – a) plagiarism The IB defines plagiarism as the representation, intentionally or unintentionally, of the ideas, words or work of another person without proper, clear and explicit acknowledgment. Candidates are expected to acknowledge the work/ideas of others in any assessment (written, oral and/or artistic) using a standard style of referencing. The source must be acknowledged at the point of use (in the body of the text or during the delivery of an oral presentation) and in the bibliography. This includes direct quotation, paraphrasing or summarizing. The exception category Academic misconduct – a) plagiarism should be used when there is a suspicion of plagiarism. Where possible, examiners are encouraged to provide a link to the plagiarised source (particularly for oral and artistic components). Academic misconduct – a) plagiarism Raise for: Any component Escalate to: IB Raise when: Plagiarism is suspected; this could be identified in written and oral components. Option B: Referencing irregularities This exception relates to: Selected question Criterion A Entire response I am raising an exception for the following reason: While candidates are expected to acknowledge work/ ideas of others in their assessments, occasionally, errors in applying a standard referencing style may occur. For example, candidates may fail to apply the chosen referencing style consistently throughout their work or provide an incomplete/ vague reference to a source used in the body of their work. The exception category Academic misconduct – b) referencing irregularities should be used when there is an error in referencing that does not amount to clear plagiarism. Option C: Collusion This exception relates to: Selected question Criterion A Entire response I am raising an exception for the following reason: Academic misconduct – c) collusion Candidates are expected to present assessments in their own words and acknowledge the words/ideas of others. This includes where collaboration with other candidates has occurred. Group working is a key element in certain subject areas however, the final work submitted for assessment should be the individual work of the candidate. Collusion occurs when very similar (or identical) work is submitted for two or more candidates. The exception category Academic misconduct – c) collusion should be used when there is a suspicion of collusion between two or more candidates. Academic misconduct – a) plagiarism Academic misconduct – b) referencing irregularities Academic misconduct – c) collusion Raise for: Any component Escalate to: IB Raise when: Collusion is expected (i.e. same work, or portions of the same work submitted for two or more candidates). Option D: Ethical breaches This exception relates to: Selected question Criterion A Entire response I am raising an exception for the following reason: Academic misconduct – d) ethical breaches Candidates are required to act in a responsible and ethical manner throughout their participation in IB programmes. Similarly, subject teachers and school administrators have clear limitations on the level of support that can be provided to a candidate. It is expected that all assessments are undertaken in an ethical way and do not: Involve other people without their explicit written consent (in the case of surveys) Inflict pain/damage on humans, animals or the environment Contain falsified/fictitious data Show evidence of undue assistance on the part of the school/teacher Involve the same or similar work being submitted to meet the requirements of more than one assessment component (duplication of work) Academic misconduct – a) plagiarism Academic misconduct – b) referencing irregularities Academic misconduct – c) collusion ! Option F: Unauthorized material This exception relates to: Selected question Criterion A Entire response I am raising an exception for the following reason: The exception category Academic misconduct – f) unauthorized material should be used when there is a suspicion that a candidate has had access to unauthorized material during an assessment. This may include access to: • A calculator for a non-calculator examination • Electronic devices (internet enabled) • Personal study notes or text books • Extensive or scripted notes during oral assessments Academic misconduct – e) unauthorized material Academic misconduct – a) plagiarism Academic misconduct – b) referencing irregularities Academic misconduct – c) collusion Academic misconduct – d) ethical breaches Academic misconduct – e) offensive, inappropriate, or obscene material Academic misconduct – f ) unauthorised material Raise for: Any component Escalate to: IB Raise when: There is a suspicion that a candidate has had access to unauthorized (not permitted) material.
