Includes reliability and performance features and criteria (for
example: Runout and maximum shaft deflections; Bearing

limits; etc.)

Myths and Misconceptions
B73 are dimensional standards only … wrong
B73 pumps are only found in chemical plants … wrong
There is only one style of “ANSI” pump (sealed horizontal) …
wrong
And the corollary – there is only one “ANSI” pump standard …

The B73 standards with “M” in the designations (ex: B73.1M1991) are current … wrong
B73 pumps do not allow customization or options … wrong

B73 Committee Overview
B73 Committee administered by ASME based on consensus
process and standards are accredited by ANSI.
Balance of Interest: Pump manufacturers, users, and other
interested parties, with nearly equal representation between
manufacturers and users.
The Committee regularly holds meetings, web-meetings, or
tele-conferences, which are open to the public.
Revisions are made periodically to the standard in accordance
with ANSI requirements. The Committee welcomes
suggestions/comments.
Standards users may:
Request interpretations;
Propose revisions;
Attend Committee meetings.

(Brief) History
B73.1
Horizontal
Efforts initiated in 1955 … eventual development of American Voluntary
Standard (AVS) in 1962, followed by a similar HI tentative standard in 1965.
Both the AVS and HI standards superseded by ANSI B123.1, approved 1968
(pub 1971).
B73.1 superseded B123.1 in 1974, starting with 15 pump sizes.
Content and scope expanded with each edition, current edition 2012.
B73.2
Vertical In-Line
Efforts initiated in 1969 at request of Manufacturing Chemists Association
(MCA), added to scope of B73 in 1971, and first edition approved in 1975.
Content and scope expanded with each edition, expect approval of next
edition in 2016.
B73.3
Sealless
Efforts formally initiated in 1986, with first edition approved in 1997.
Content and scope expanded with each edition, current edition 2015.
B73.5
Non-metallic
Efforts formally initiated in 1986, with first edition published in 1995,
withdrawn 2012.

Address design and specification for single stage centrifugal
pumps for chemical process
Include design features to facilitate installation and
maintenance and to enhance reliability and safety
Include dimensional interchangeability requirements so that
pumps from any source of supply will be interchangeable from
an installation perspective (not individual parts!)
Broadly applicable beyond chemical process
Reference / leverage other national and international
standards (ease of use, current, minimize content)

Horizontal End Suction Centrifugal Pumps
Covers metallic and solid polymer centrifugal pumps of horizontal, end
suction, single stage, centerline discharge design.
Recent Revisions:
B73.5 on solid polymer pumps was merged into B73.1 (B73.5 was
withdrawn.)

B73 Application Range
Size: 1.5x1-6 through 10x8-17
Flow: 4,000 gpm (909 m3/h) at 60 Hz
Head: 600 feet (183 meters) at 60 Hz
Temperature: up to 500°F (260°C)
Casing Pressure: at least as great as pressure-temperature
rating of ASME B16.5 Class 150 or ASME B16.42 Class 150
flanges for material used, although higher pressure rating
often available with Class 300 flanges.
Manufacturers may offer pumps rated beyond these nominal
values
