WOODWORK HAND TOOLS - HOLDING TOOLS OBJECTIVES: At the end of this lesson, the student should be able to: a. Define woodwork holding tools. b. State types of holding tools. c. State the uses of holding tools. d. Sketch the various types of holding tools. Woodwork Holding Tools are used to hold workpieces during an operation. They include the following: i. bench vice, ii. hand vice, iii. machine vice, iv. bench stop, v. bench hook and vi. clamps. Bench vice/fitter’s vice: is used for holding jobs when performing the following operations – filling, tapping, cutting, assembling parts etc. Bench vice (label this) Hand vice: is used for holding small objects when performing drilling, riveting, bolting, gluing and other related jobs. Hand vice Bench stop and bench hook: are used for keeping workpieces in position when working on them. Bench stop Bench hook Machine vice: is used for holding workpieces firmly during drilling and turning operations. Clamps are used to hold work pieces during screwing, sawing and chiseling operations while bench stop, and bench hooks are used for keeping workpieces in position so that they can be comfortably operated on. Types of clamps (i). The G-Clamp: is used for holding small pieces of wood together for gluing operations. G-Clamp (ii). The F-Clamp: has an F shape and it has the same use as the G-clamp.
