ROCK CLIMBING Rock climbing, also known as mountain climbing, is a sport where people climb up a natural rock or artificial rock wall. There are two types of rock climbing: indoor gym climbing which is now very popular as it is safer and easier, and outdoor mountain climbing which is far more challenging but also dangerous. The goal of rock climbing is to reach the top. It tests the climber's strength and balance. It also provides a great physical and mental workout. Individuals who are interested in giving this sport a try should visit an indoor climbing gym first, as it provides a safer environment to start in. Those who are interested in moving on to outdoor mountain climbing can join one of the many guided tours available. The most important climbing equipment is a pair of proper climbing shoes. Modern climbing shoes have stiff and smooth rubber soles that protect the feet from sharp, rough rocks. They also provide more friction and control than normal shoes. Another important piece of climbing equipment is a modern climbing rope. It is able to stretch under tension so that climbers will not experience pain when they fall. Karabiners are also important. They are rings of solid aluminium that can be opened while climbing. Rock climbers use them to attach themselves safely to things. Rock climbing was recently recognised by the International Olympic Committee as a sport. It is a fun activity, but climbers must remember that safety comes first. A Teenager's Guide to Life by Muireann Duffy Everyone says that being a teenager is the best time of your life. That's easy for you to say when you're old and you decide to look back on your teen years through your spectacles. Seriously, if anyone says it is easy being 16. you should just ignore them. One of the hardest parts of being a teenager is that it's a constant juggling act. Being organised isn't your main focus. There's nothing wrong with your locker door failing to close and spilling your books and other stuff onto the floor. As for your room, forget your wardrobe. Who needs one? The floor is the perfect place to keep your clothes and it allows you to see them all at once. Never make your bed. A messy, unmade bed can look just as nice as a perfectly made one. Your school days are the best days of your life... urgh! School is somewhere you're made to attend and work yourself to death, just like a prison. Don't worry about the teachers-just stay on their good side. Homework? All of that is boring. When you're a teenager, your friends are your life but enemies come just as easily as friends do. The only way to get over having enemies is to be the bigger person. Laugh at their jokes, say hello when you see them, smile when they're mean to you, just like the Kelly Clarkson lyrics: 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger'. It's easy to write about all the bad things, but even I have to admit that it's not all that bad. You'll make friends you'll go on adventures with, even when you're old and grey. Besides, just be nice to your parents. As for your brothers and sisters, be nice to them too because friends, money and other things are great, but when it comes down to it, your family is all you have. In the meantime, take care of yourself and what you happy. (Adapted from http://clarechampion.ie/a-teenagers-guide-to-life/) 7 Question 25-32 Answer the questions below.
