What should you do if you hear rumors that your accounting software is being discontinued?
There are only so many good solutions for accounting software available. Fortunately,
QuickBooks Desktop is not being retired; rather, it is simply undergoing improvements. We
advise using its online version instead, though.
It's not easy to make a change of this magnitude on any platform, particularly when the support
offered might not be sufficient. We are available to assist.
Many of our clients at CSI Accounting & Payroll have benefited from our assistance in switching
from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online. What the customers wanted to know was as
follows:

Is QuickBooks Desktop Being Discontinued?
Over the past ten or so years, you may have noticed a trend in technology: software
that you used to buy on a disc and install on your computer is now usually available
online or through subscription. QuickBooks is joining that change in this case.
The desktop edition of QuickBooks is not going away; nevertheless, a subscriptionbased approach is being implemented. This implies that in order to keep using
QuickBooks, you will need to pay an annual subscription fee.

Can I Still Use QuickBooks Desktop?
Since the change to a subscription model for QuickBooks Desktop has already
happened, you should think about making the switch now.
Some time ago, CSI foresaw this change and encouraged our clients to convert from
QuickBooks Desktop to Online. At first, some said they were unhappy with the change,
but we asked them to give it a chance for a few months. At that point, they were happy
to stay with QuickBooks Online - it just takes some adjusting!

What is the Difference Between QB Desktop and QB Online?
QuickBooks originally bought the web version from a developer. We surmise that this
explains some of the earlier, more significant disparities between the two versions;
however, QuickBooks has subsequently released updates that have reduced the
differences. Since internet technology is the way of the future, our best bet is that
efforts will remain concentrated in this area.
Inventory and Point of Sale are two things that are still absent from the current web
edition but are present in the desktop version. If you do deal with these products,
though, there is a ton of third-party software available that is made to interact with
QuickBooks Online, so it's not like QuickBooks Desktop is your only option!
