The elements of art are the building blocks of an artistic creation, a "visual language" or "visual alphabet" used by the artist. Line Shape Form Color Value Texture Space Line – a continuous mark made on a surface Shape – two-dimensional 1. Geometric (circle, square, rectangle, triangle) 2. Organic (natural shapes) Form – three-dimensional and encloses and takes up space Zentangle Pattern practice A Zentangle is a drawing of repeating patterns. It has a shape, called a string. The shape is filled with a pattern (called a tangle). This form of drawing is simple, relaxing, enjoyable and a great way to express yourself creatively. Zentangle Pattern practice STEP1: Draw 8 neat squares, around 4cm*4cm STEP2: Fill each square with a different pattern. Some can be copied, but some should be your own. STEP3: You can begin with pencil, however, for maximum impact, your patterns should be finished in black pen (trace the edges with black marker). Color – that which is perceived when light hits and reflects off an object. *Properties of color: 1. Hue (name of a color) 2. Value (the brightness or darkness of a color) 3. Intensity (the quality of brightness and purity) Value – the lightness or darkness of a color Monet’s obsession with color value: He repeatedly painted the same subject at different times of day and in different weather conditions. Monet captured the foreground under different lighting conditions. They are excellent examples of how light affects color value on subjects. Space – the illusion of space is created through light and shadow Texture – the surface quality or feel of an object Physical texture in art points to the physical feeling of artwork.
