Roseola Infantum
● Caused by human herpes 6 and 7
● Herpesviridae (dsDNA viruses with enveloped
icosahedral capsids)
● Children under 3
● Spread via respiratory fluids or direct contact
● Presents with high fever that lasts 3-5 days look for
respiratory symptoms
● Rash is blanching macular or maculopapular rash that
persists for 1-2 days after the infection has subsided
○ Starts at neck and trunk and spreads to
extremities and face

● Presents with koplik’s spots seen as white dots on the inflamed buccal mucosa and a
maculopapular rash on the face and the trunk
Varicella Zoster
● Causes chicken pox
● Highly contagious: nasopharyngeal secretions
● Herpesviridae: dsDNA, icosahedral enveloped capsid
● Begins as macules that rapidly become papules: itchy rash
● Rash appears as successive crops that progress in a specific pattern
Shingles
● Herpes virus is forever, VSV is a herpesvirus
● VSV goes latent in sensory nerve ending in the skin
● Rash begins as painful erythematous papules along a single or several contiguous,
dermatomes, within several days grouped vesicles develop
● Intensely painful
