CANTILEVER 6.53 METHOD Group 3 WHAT IS A CANTILEVER? A long projecting beam or girder fixed at only one end. Cantilevers provide a clear space underneath the beam without any supporting columns or bracing. Cantilevers became a popular structural form with the introduction of steel and reinforced concrete. They are used extensively in building construction, notably in: Cantilever bridges. 2 DEFINITION The cantilever method is an approximate method for calculating shear forces and moments developed in beams and columns of a frame or structure due to lateral loads. The applied lateral loads typically include wind loads and earthquake loads, which must be taken into consideration while designing buildings. 3 THE CANTILEVER METHOD The cantilever method is very similar to the portal method. We still put hinges at the middles of the beams and columns. The only difference is that for the cantilever method, instead of finding the shears in the columns first using an assumption, we will find the axial force in the columns using an assumption. The assumption that is used to find the column axial force is that the entire frame will deform laterally like a single vertical cantilever. When a cantilever deforms laterally, it has a strain profile through its thickness where one face of the cantilever is in tension and the opposite face is in compression. Since we can generally assume that plain sections remain the strain profile is linear. The relative values of the tension and compression strain are dependent on the location of the neutral axis for bending, which is in turn dependent on the shape of the cantilever's cross-section 4 ASSUMPTIONS 1. An inflexion point occurs at the midpoint of each girder/beam. 2. An inflexion point occurs at mid height of each column. 3. In a storey, the intensity of axial stress in a column is proportional to its horizontal distance from the center of gravity of all the columns in that storey. 7/1/20XX 5 STEPS IN SOLVING 1) Column axial loads 2) Girder shears 3) Girder moments 4) Column moments 5) Column shear 7/1/20XX Pitch deck title 6 SAMPLE PROBLEMS SOLVING Analyze the frame using Cantilever Method.
