be used to express and resolve personal conflicts and use strategies for linking textual information,
repairing, and improving public speaking. They also demonstrate an understanding of how to use
emphasis markers in persuasive texts, various modal verb forms, and reflexive and intensive pronouns.
Essential Understanding: Works of literature reflect their times.
Essential Question: How valuable are literary works as historical records?
I. Preliminaries:
Review: The students will share some background on book 1 of “Aeneid”.
Focus: General and Specific Statements
Motivation:
Imagine you're reading a news article. The writer provides detailed facts about an event, but
also includes a sentence that summarizes the main idea. What are these two types of sentences
called?

A. Presentation of Concepts
Students will know
 The difference between a general statement and a specific statement.
Students will be able to:
 Formulate specific and general statements.
 Express an appreciation for the importance of using specific statements when clarity and
precision are essential in communication.
Activities*:
 Analyzing statements
Students will analyze the two given statements.
1. Philippines is considered a tourist destination.
2. Philippines is considered a tourist destination because of its stunning views, warm beaches,
and hospitable locals.
Questions: How would you differentiate these two statements?

 Discussing the difference between a general statement and a specific statement

GROUP 1- Sorting Activity- Students will sort the given list of statements into specific and general
categories.
1. Many literary works feature star-crossed lovers as central characters, often influenced by
societal conflicts.
2. In 'Romeo and Juliet' by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet are tragic protagonists who
come from feuding families and fall in love.
3. The poem 'The Road Not Taken' by Robert Frost uses the metaphor of a diverging road to
reflect on life choices and regret.
4. Poetry frequently employs metaphors and symbolism to convey deeper themes and emotions.
5. In 'The Odyssey' by Homer, Odysseus embarks on a heroic journey to return home, facing
various challenges and obstacles.
6. Epic poems frequently feature heroic figures on journeys that test their character and resolve.
7. In 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee, the character Atticus Finch represents moral integrity
and empathy in the face of racial injustice in the American South during the 1930s.

GROUP 2- Picture Cards- Students will describe each card using specific or general
statements.
GROUP 3- Sentence Expansion- Students will expand the given specific statements into a
broader statement/general statements.
1. In the 21st century, social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have
revolutionized how we interact and share information.
2. Political leaders must be good listeners as well as effective public speakers.
3. Birds of prey, such as eagles and hawks, help control small populations, reducing the
damage to crops and maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
4. Encyclopedias such as 'Encyclopedia Britannica' contain extensive articles on a wide
range of topics, making them valuable references for research and exploration.
5. Learning to read and write improves communication skills and boosts self-confidence.

Objective: To analyze how specific and general statements are used in various forms of media and
assess their impact on communication and understanding.
Instructions:
Select a Media Piece: Choose a piece of media for analysis. It can be a news article, a magazine
feature, a blog post, a social media post, or an advertisement. Ensure that
the chosen piece contains both specific and general statements.
