Pronunciation of –ED:



/t/ after voiceless sounds: /p/, /f/, /s/, /k/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/ → e.g. stopped, locked, etc.
/d/ after all other sounds: → e.g. played, tied, robbed, etc.
/id/ after /t/ and /d/ → e.g. wanted, landed, etc.
Spelling changes:



Verbs ending in –e simply add –d → e.g. live > lived, smile > smiled, etc.
Verbs ending in consonant + -y change –y to –i → e.g. try > tried, marry >
married, etc. (BUT play > played).
Verbs ending in a stressed vowel + consonant double that consonant → e.g.
plan > planned, stop > stopped, prefer > preferred, etc. (BUT if the vowel is
not stressed → open > opened, offer > offered).
