A special function also provides for a „Window Strip“. The various stripping options are explained on a step-by-step basis in this chapter with the help of a few working examples. First of all, we describe the general settings which apply to all stripping options. These are the settings for stripping diameter, spin time, pulloff speed and gripper pressure. In these Operating Instructions the keys to be pressed are enclosed in square [brackets]. Setting the stripping diameter The adjustment scale You will find the adjustment scale for adjusting the stripping diameter on the cutting head inside the unit (Fig. 5). The adjustment scale covers the range from 2 to 26 mm (0.1 to 1.0“). It is not linear. The settings are carried out on the two adjustment knobs. When operating very thin cable, the adjustment knobs may turn of oneself and change the adjusted diameter. In this case, lock the stud bolt A shown in fig. 5. Metric scale From 2 to 10 mm, each separate line represents 0.2 mm. From 10 to 26 mm, each separate line represents 0.5 mm. The level to be selected must be read on the left hand side of the adjustment mark (Fig. 6). Inch scale From 0.1“ to 0.5“, each separate line represents 1/100“. From 0.5“ to 1.0“, each separate line represents 1/50“. The level to be selected must be read on the left hand side of the adjustment mark (Fig. 6). Adjustment knobs Scale A Cutter head with 4 blades Fig. 5. Cutting head and adjustment scale metric scale Adjustment marks inch scale Fig. 6. Adjustment scales The core(s) in a cable is/are frequently not precisely centered. You must therefore pay attention to the following two types of settings. Schleuniger JS 8400 29 Core precisely centered If the core is located precisely in the center of the cable, then measure the greatest diameter of the core for the setting. Diameter measured To prevent any possibility of the blades damaging the core, set a slightly larger diameter (Fig. 7). Fig. 7. Core centered Diameter setting Core off-center If the cores are not positioned in the center of the cable then measure the insulation at the thinnest point and deduct double this measurement from the external diameter of the cable. Diameter setting To prevent any possibility of the blades damaging the core, set a slightly larger diameter (Fig. 8). Fig. 8. Core off-centre thinnest point in the insulaton Setting the spin time The spin time is the duration of the rotary cutting by the four blades. The is range from 1 to 11 seconds (Spin Time Adjustment Knob Fig. 1, Page 23). The following rule of thumb will help you in choosing this setting: Insulation properties Adjustment range hard, tough, brittle >6s soft, easy to cut <6s 30 Schleuniger JS 8400 Setting the pull-off speed The pull-off speed determines the speed at which the insulation is removed from the core. The adjustment range is from 1 to 9 (Pull-off speed adjustment knob Fig. 1, Page 8). The following rule of thumb will help you in choosing this setting: Insulation properties Adjustment range Speed very adhesive, soft (rubber) 1 to 4 slower very adhesive 1 to 5 readily adhesive, soft (rubber) 3 to 7 readily adhesive 4 to 9 faster Setting the gripper pressure The grippers hold the cable in position during processing. Since the hardness and friction of standard cables differ greatly, you can adjust the gripper pressure. (Gripper pressure adjustment knob Fig. 1 Page 23). The following rule of thumb will help you in choosing in this setting: Insulation properties Adjustment range very soft, rubber-like 2 to 3 bar medium soft, plastic, PVC 3 to 5 bar hard, smooth surface 6 to 7 bar You can adjust the gripper pressure in both operating modes (“Automatic” and “Manual”). However, in “Automatic” mode the pressure display on the manometer does not appear until you press [Start]. If you wish to preset the gripper pressure before you press [Start] then proceed as follows: • Switch the “Automatic/Manual” toggle switch to “Manual” mode • Select [F] for function 1. • Select [-] for gripper close. • Select the desired gripper pressure (“gripper pressure” adjustment knob). • Switch the “Automatic / Manual” toggle switch to “Automatic“. Schleuniger JS 8400 31 Inserting the cable The procedure for inserting the cable and initiating the stripping process is described precisely in the working examples. It is however important that you observe a number of rules during this procedure: Insert cable ends as straight as possible into the machine. 4 Straighten bent cable ends by hand. Fig. 9. Inserting cable If the gripper pressure is set too low, the situation may arise whereby the grippers do not hold the cable properly. The cable is then pulled into the machines. You should always let go of the cable when you press [Start] or when you initiate the stripping process using the footpedal. + There are no fixed rules for the general settings. The cable dimensions and properties of the cable materials are too diverse for this. In order to achieve the optimum stripping results we recommend that you “get a feel for” the correct setting. You will quickly develop this feel on the basis of your own experience. We have put together a blank table to enable you to record cable data which you use on a repeat basis. You will find the table on Page 57. Inserting the cable sleeve You can use the cable sleeve supplied for cables with a diameter of < 16 mm (< 0.63“). Its purpose is to make it easier to insert the cable. The cable sleeve is very easy to install. • Remove the retention pin from the lower hole by pulling it straight out. • Insert the cable sleeve into the hole up to the stop. • Secure the cable sleeve using the retention pin (upper hole). Fig. 10. Inserting cable sleeve Cable sleeve Retention pin 32 Schleuniger JS 8400 Working example, full strip In the first working example, we are processing the following cable: external diameter 14 mm, core diameter 9 mm, core centered, stripping length 100 mm, full strip. The insulation is hard and tough. (You will find all the necessary operating controls in Fig. 1 on Page 23.) If the Display does not coincide with the instruction then the „Window-Strip“ is activated. Deactivate the „Window-Strip“ as described on Page 40). Hall effect sensor • Open the protective cover and set the stripping length adjustment knob SL to 150 mm (Fig. 25). • Set the Dead-Line X3 adjustment knob to 160 mm. Pull off length adjusting knob X2 Dead-line adjustment knob X3 Stripping length adjustment knob Fig. 25. Setting Window-Strip (1) • Set the pull-off length X2 adjustment knob to 85 mm. • Set the Window-Strip X1 adjustment knob to 25 mm. • Set the stripping diameter. In our example this is 12 mm. Set 12.5 mm. • Set a spin time of 5 seconds. • Select pull-off speed 4 and set the gripper pressure to 6 bar. • Insert the cable up to the stop. Let go of the cable. • Press [Start] or depress the footpedal. The cable is now processed. Schleuniger JS 8400 39 Working example, Window-Strip (2) In our second Window-Strip working example we are using the same cable as in the working example of Window-Strip (1). It is therefore only the different length setting which differs. (You will find the lengths in Fig. 26). 150 mm 35 mm 50 mm 35 mm 30 mm 120 mm 100 mm Fig. 26. Working example of Window-Strip (2) The settings are: SL = 150 mm (100 mm + 50 mm) X3 = SL - 30 mm = 120 mm (partial strip!) X2 = X3 - (35mm + 35 mm) = 50 mm X1 = 35 mm (Window-Strip length) The procedure for this example is precisely the same as for Window-Strip (1). All you have to do is alter the linear measurement. 40 Schleuniger JS 8400 Deactivate Window-Strip • Turn the „Automatic / manual“ toggle switch to the left to „manual“ (Fig. 1, Page 23). function 1 is activated (Fig. 27). t s Man Gripper Gripper t s FUNC [ 1 ] [+] [−] open close Fig. 27. Window-Strip deactivated 05 Schleuniger JS 8400 41 Operation with strip lengths > 200 mm (7.87“) Normal operation allows for partial strip actions up to about 180 mm (7.0“). Using the extention channel (option) you can carry out a partial strip of max. 200 mm on the stripping lengths up to 400 mm. Using this type of operation with the long stripping lengths you can only remove the insulation from materials which allow for very easy removal. (E. g; loose multiconductor or fibre optic cable Jackets). Installing the extension channel Remove the mains plug and separate the JS8400 from the compressed air. • Open the protective cover. Stripping length adjustment bar “Slug eject” angle bracket • Remove the “extension channel cover” on the rear of the unit (Fig. 3, Page 24). • Remove the “stripping length adjustment knob” together with the associated stop (Fig. 25, Page 38). • Raise the adjustment bar for the stripping length using your left hand and push the „slug eject“ angle bracket horizontally using your fingers. Extension channel • Slide the extension channel from the rear into the unit and secure it to the „slug eject“ angle bracket (Fig. 31). • Mount the stripping length stop to the stripping length adjustment bar. It lengthens the scale for 200 mm (Fig. 31). 200 mm Striping length stop Stripping length adjustment bar Fig. 31. Fitting the extension channel 42 Schleuniger JS 8400 Working example of extended stripping length In this working example we are creating the following cable: cable external diameter 16 mm, core diameter 12 mm, stripping length 600 mm, partial strip length 100 mm. The insulation is soft and can be removed very easily. 100 mm 600 mm Fig. 32. Working example of extended stripping length • (The main switch is switched on and the compressed air supply connected). Open the protective cover and set the stripping diameter (Page 28). • Set the pull-off length (Page 32). 600 mm Cable • Close the protective cover. • Select the „slug eject“ key to „OFF“. In this position the LED does not light up. • Switch the “Automatic / Manual” toggle switch to the right to “Automatic”. Cutting head Fig. 33. 600 mm stripping length • Insert the cable into the JS8400 up to the required position. In our example we want to remove 600 mm. Measure the stripping length as shown in Fig. 33. You can also mark the cable at 600 mm and insert the cable into the JS8400 until the marking is aligned flush with the blades. Let go of the cable. • Press [Start] or depress the footpedal. The cable is now processed. If you wish to go back to working in one of the other modes, you have to remove the extension channel and reinsert the stripping length adjustment knob. Schleuniger JS 8400 43 MAINTENANCE Cleaning and Lubrication Switch the main switch off. Remove the mains plug and disconnect the JS8400 from the compressed air supply. • Open the protective cover. Remove larger eject residues and dirt inside the unit by hand. We recommend removing dust, small pieces of copper and similar materials using a vacuum cleaner tool and a paintbrush. • To remove stubborn dirt residues use a cloth and a standard all-purpose cleaner. Do not use any corrosive solvents. • Clean the outer casing of the unit and the protective cover (Plexiglas) using a soft cloth and a standard all-purpose cleaner. Do not use any corrosive solvents. Leadscrew Gear cutting head Don't lubricate this gear Linear guides Fig. 34. Lubrication points • Lubricate the leadscrew and the gear on the cutting head once a year or whenever the parts have run dry. • Also lubricate the linear guides with a little grease after cleaning them using a cloth. Do not use too much grease. The small gear on the coupling should not be lubricated because too much grease can damage the coupling linings. The gear on the coupling is lubricated by the gear on the cutting head. 44 Schleuniger JS 8400 Replacing the coupling linings Turn the main switch off, remove the mains connector and disconnect the JS8400 from the compressed air supply. The following work must only be carried out by qualified personnel (Schleuniger agents, qualified specialists of the client). • Open the protective cover. Coupling friction adjustment screw with lock nut Coupling attachment screws • Raise the alignment rail for the stripping length (Fig. 31, Page 41) and slide the rail right to the back beneath the machine casing. This gives you free access to the coupling. • Undo the lock nut on the coupling friction adjustment screw (Fig. 35) and unscrew the adjustment screw until the blade head can be easily turned by hand. Fig. 35. Removing the coupling Cutting head Milled surface • Turn the blade head until the milled surface is positioned against the coupling (Fig. 36). This is the only way to remove the coupling. • Undo the three attachment screws and remove the coupling (Fig. 35). Ensure that the individual coupling components do not fall out when removing the coupling, otherwise you may lose the plate springs. So hold the unit firmly on the rim of the gear when you remove the coupling. Fig. 36. Cutting head and coupling Coupling Schleuniger JS 8400 • Disassemble the coupling as shown in Fig. 37. Here again, take care to ensure that the plate springs do not fall out. 45 Large coupling lining Hold firmly her to dismantle Small coupling lining • Remove the old coupling linings. • Use a cloth to clean all components, including the inside of the JS 8400. Pin • Insert the new small coupling lining onto the mounting inside the JS8400. Ensure the pin fits into the hole in the coupling lining. Fig. 37. Dismanteling the coupling • Now insert the new large coupling lining (Fig. 37). Here again the pin must fit in the hole. • Assemble all the coupling parts and fit the coupling unit into the JS8400. • Now tighten the coupling friction adjustment screw so that the cutting head can only be rotated by hand using a great deal of force. Now tighten the lock nut. Slide the guide rail for the stripping length (Fig. 31 Page 41) back into the operating position. • Close the protective cover, insert the mains plug and by pressing [Start] run through one operating cycle. • The scale on the cutting head must now be lying almost horizontal (“home position”) (see Fig. 38, Page 46). If it is not then please follow the “setting the coupling friction” instructions on Page 46. 46 Schleuniger JS 8400 Setting the coupling friction The coupling friction can change either as a result of wear and tear or environmental influences. You can check the coupling friction setting by looking at the cutting head scale. After each operating cycle the cutting head should return to the „Home-Position“, the scale is then virtually horizontal. • If the coupling friction is too tight, the cutting head stops before the scale is in the horizontal position. • If the coupling friction is not tight enough, the cutting head does not stop until after the scale has gone past the horizontal. In Fig. 38, the positions of the scale are shown in schematic form (looking into the inside of the machine). The position of the scale can vary a few degrees from the horizontal, without any problem, for an optimum coupling friction setting. Coupling too tight Optimum coupling setting Fig. 38. Setting coupling friction, view of cutting head from rear Coupling not tight enough Schleuniger JS 8400 47 Procedure for setting the coupling friction The following work must only be carried out by qualified personnel (Schleuniger agents, qualified specialists of the client). • Open the protective cover. • Raise the adjustment bar for the stripping length (Fig. 31, Page 41) and slide the bar fully to the back beneath the machine housing. This gives you free access to the coupling. Coupling • Loosen the locking nut on the coupling friction adjustment screw (M6 socket head screw) (Fig. 39). • If the coupling friction is too tight, slightly loosen the adjustment screw. • If the coupling friction is not tight enough, slightly tighten the adjustment screw further. + Coupling friction adjustment screw with lock nut Fig. 39. Setting coupling Turn the adjustment screw very slightly (1 to 5°). The coupling will respond very sensitvely to this setting. • Tighten the lock nut. • Close the protective cover and initiate an operating cycle by pressing [Start]. Check the position of the scale on the cutting head (Fig. 38, Page 46). • If the scale is still not in the optimum position, repeat the entire procedure. (Small deviations from the optimum position are acceptable and do not affect the cutting or stripping quality). 48 Schleuniger JS 8400 Replacing the cutting head timing belt Turn the main switch off, remove the mains plug and disconnect the JS8400 from the compressed air supply. The following work must only be carried out by qualified personnel (Schleuniger agents, qualified personnel of the client). • Remove the housing together with the plexiglas protective cover. Do not forget to disconnect the Emergency-Off switch before lifting up the housing. Spindle drive timing belt • Dismantle the coupling as described in the section entitled “Replacing the Coupling” on Page 44. • Remove the rear screw on the motor flange. Undo the front screw by about 5 mm (Fig. 40). • You can now tilt the motor to the side and remove the faulty timing belt. • Insert the new timing belt and gently tighten the screws. Cutting head timing belt • Rotate the spindle drive using the timing belt until the motor cutting head has reached its furthest position (Fig. 40). • Now tighten the tension on the replacement timing belt so that the motor cannot in any way come into contact with the timing belt for the spindle drive. Tighten the screws. • Assemble the coupling. Take care to ensure that the plate springs do not fall out during the assembly process. Cutting head motor Front screw Rear screw Fig. 40. Timing belt cutting head • Fit the housing. Do not forget to reconnect the Emergency-Off switch. • Close the protective cover, insert the mains plug and run through one operating cycle. • The scale on the cutting head must now be lying practically horizontal (“home position”) (see Fig. 38, Page 46). If it isn’t then please follow the “setting the coupling friction” instructions on Page 46. Schleuniger JS 8400 49 Replacing the blades Turn the main switch off, remove the mains plug and disconnect the JS8400 from the compressed air supply. The following work must only be carried out by qualified personnel (Schleuniger agents, qualified personnel of the client). • Open the protective cover. • Raise the stripping length adjustment bar (Fig. 31, Page 41), and slide the bar fully to the back beneath the machine housing. This gives you free access to the blades. Blade screws (M4) • Remove the old blade(s). • Clean the guidechannel on the cutting head. • Apply a small amount of oil to the new blade(s). Guide pin • Install the new blade(s). Please see Fig. 41 for the correct blade position. • Close the protective cover. Fig. 41. Schleuniger JS 8400 53 Snared cable If a cable becomes snared during the stripping process you cannot remove the cable from the machine in the “Automatic” mode. For this you require “Manual” mode. You have a total of 4 functions available in this mode. Using function 4 activates the “Window-Strip” which is described on Page 36. Functions 1, 2 and 3 are „step-by-step functions“ and are intended for clearing faults: • Function 1 opens and closes the grippers (See also Page 30). • Function 2 opens and closes the blades. • Function 3 moves the pull-off device forwards and backwards. To make the relationships easy to understand it is best if we run through a practical example. Let’s assume that a cable has become snared, blocking the blades and the machine has shut down: • Turn the „Automatic / Manual“ toggle switch to the left to „Manual“ (Fig. 1 page 23).
