Under of Cluster 4: Forestry OREST Forestry is the science and practice of managing and caring for the forest. It involves the understanding of the biodiversity, economic, and importance of forests and learning to ensure that forests are healthy and productive for current and future generations ONSERVATION f FORESTRY o e c n a t r o p Im Biodiversity What is FORESTRY? C 2 Climate change mitigation: 1 Forests absorb carbon dioxide helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change. Habitats for biodiversity Forests are home to many plant and animal species, by managing forests sustainably, we can help to protect and conserve this biodiversity. There is an estimated 726 million ha of forest (2023) Carbon Dioxide hits 417.06 parts per million (2022) 3 Environmental Services 4 Forests play a key role in regulating the water cycle, helping to prevent soil erosion and maintain water quality. Deforestation and Reforestation DEFORESTATION is the process of clearing forests and trees permanently to make way for land use, agriculture, and urbanization. This can be done through natural causes (such as wildfires and hurricanes) or human activities (such as logging, agriculture, and urban development). REFORESTATION is the process of planting new trees in areas where forests have been cleared to restore the ecological balance and mitigate deforestation's negative effects. Livelihood opportunities Forests provide a wide range of products, including woods for construction and furniture. NEGATIVE Deforestation results in habitat loss, soil erosion, climate change, and an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. POSITIVE Reforestation helps to provide habitat for wildlife, prevent soil erosion, and regulate the climate.
