Sample CSETSETC Paragraph
Prompt: What role did Howard play in the civil rights movement?
(Based on the article, “The Establishment of Howard”)
Sample Paragraph
Howard played a key role in the modern civil rights movement through its leadership and by fighting for
equal funding. First, the school hired Edwina Kruse, one of the first black teachers in the area, as its principal.
The article “Establishment of Howard” states that she “was one of the first black teachers in Middletown and
was initially responsible for curriculum development in rural schools until the school board appointed her
principal at Howard in 1876.” Her appointment as principal demonstrates that Howard had a commitment to
supporting black leaders in the civil rights movement. Second, Howard also fought for equal funding with white
schools. Through Edwina Kruse’s leadership, Howard and other black schools, “were financed at a level nearly
consistent with white schools” (“Establishment of Howard”). Having equal funding between black and white
schools was rare in a time where black schools were usually discriminated against. So Edwina Kruse’s
appointment as a black principal and her battles for equal funding for the school show Howard’s contributions
to the civil rights movement.
