Completion of post-secondary degrees allow for better jobs that contribute to successful futures.

education. Canadian Journal of Education, 35(1), 283-284.

The article written by James Brown reveals how Canadian university students are
achieving success in higher education. The article focuses on how students achieve success with
the use of provided services on campus. The author wrote that “Counselling” and “Employment
and Career Services” allow students to achieve their full potential during the years that they
spend in post-secondary institutions. The author argues that without the use of campus services
students would not be able to achieve elevated levels of success. It was revealed that when
students have access to these on campus services, they are more likely to achieve success in
higher education which is more likely to benefit them later in life. This source relates to my
thesis statement because when students achieve elevated levels of success in education, they can
get higher paying jobs that will benefit them in the future. This source relates to my overall topic
of success because if gradate employees have access to services within their place of
employment, they will be able to perform better.
Donald, W. E., Ashleigh, M. J., & Baruch, Y. (2018). Students’ perceptions of education and
employability: Facilitating career transition from higher education into the labor
market. Career Development International, 23(5), 513-540. http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/CDI09-2017-0171
In this article Donald, W.E., Ashleigh, M.J., & Baruch, Y. review how students perceive
higher education in respect to the future. The article argued that employment rates are based off
the type of degree that a student completes. The authors mentioned that gender and education can
influence students entering the workforce. Students identified that everyone should be treated
equally in the workforce and that everyone should be seen as equal. The article found that pay
gap was determined by gender and the education you received. To obtain jobs that have high
salaries, it was found that higher levels of education are needed. The authors conducted studies
on various students to get their opinions if higher education will benefit them in the future. Their
research found that most students believed that a certificate degree should be completed before
entering the work industry. The rest of students claimed that a degree should not define which
jobs students are granted and that students will develop a strong understanding of the workforce
without the use of a degree. This source relates to my topic because it explores the idea if higher
education is needed to obtain better paying jobs. The authors suggest that employment rates will
be based off the level of education you complete and that most students agree that some sort of

degree will be beneficial. This source will not be the main idea of my overall thesis, but it is very
closely related to it because success in the future is based off an individuals work.

This paper was written in 2016 and uses various sources on how a post-secondary degree
is beneficial for post graduate students who are entering the workforce. In this article Roy Y
Chan stresses the importance of completing a college degree as it allows for social and economic
benefits. This article focuses on addressing the percentage of how likely companies are going to
hire individuals who have completed undergraduate programs and graduate programs. The paper
claims that post-secondary institutions teach students to develop important life skills that come
together to create multiple social benefits. Intrapersonal skills, critical thinking skills, and
creativity are taught by major institutions in hopes of preparing their students to enter elevated
levels of work force. Post-secondary institutions provide the building blocks of success which
help students benefit on the global economy scale. This article is useful to my research topic as
Roy Y Chan provides specific evidence as to why post-secondary institutions teach students
useful resources that are needed for success in the workforce. This article has no limitations and
there is no bias tone as to why or why not the completion of post-secondary is beneficial for the
future. I will be applying this source to my thesis because success will be determined by how
much the institution prepared students with useful skills needed for the future. The knowledge
obtained from a degree will reflect in the job students choose to do in the future. This article will
not be my main focusing point, but it will be useful as it explains how post-secondary institutions
help their students learn critical skills needed for successful and rewarding futures.
Fenesi, B., & Sana, F. (2015). What is your degree worth? The relationship between post-secondary
programs and employment outcomes. The Canadian Journal of Higher Education, 45(4), 383399. https://lc.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://www.proquest.com/scholarly-journals/what-isyour-degree-worth-relationship-between/docview/1779935699/se-2
In this article the authors review the relationship between post-secondary programs and
employment outcomes. The authors obtain their data from various sources, including tables and
statistics. The paper explores ideas of how degrees relate to success in the future. The authors
discovered that certain degrees result in jobs unrelated to the program result in unemployment
rates and possible academic upgrading. The research in this paper demonstrates how post2

secondary degrees influence the jobs students can obtain after graduation. Program choices
should be chosen carefully as there are specific skills needed in certain areas of work. The paper
suggested that humanities graduates are less likely to find work after graduation which results in
upgrading or finding a job that is not related to their degree. The authors stated that postsecondary institutions do not teach their students enough skill to enter the work force which
causes students to be under qualified. Their research focuses on informing people on how their
degree relates to the job they are hoping to achieve after they graduate. This source was written
in 2015 and suggested multiple ideas that connected to my thesis statement. The main limitation
to this source is that it focuses heavily on what comes after a humanities degree. This source is
useful to my thesis statement because it is important to make sure that individuals are choosing a
degree that will allow them to get good jobs that result in success in the future. This source
provided useful information to my topic because it outlines the relationship between a graduate
degree and the employment factors that follow.
Lee, K. A., Leon Jara Almonte, J., & Youn, M. (2013). What to do next: An exploratory study of the
post-secondary decisions of American students. Higher Education, 66(1), 1-16.
http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10734-012-9576-6
In this article the authors explore the possible choices American students face after
graduation from high school. The article identifies how factors of unemployment, remaining a
student, or entering the workforce affect the lives of American students. The authors used data
from the “Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002” and concluded how race and ender
contribute to the likelihood of going back to school. Their research showed that students of Asian
backgrounds are more likely to return to school after high school than Caucasian ones. The
number of American students enrolling in some form of post secondary education continues to
go up with about 70.1% enrolling in 2009. The article found that students who continue to work
during post-secondary are more likely to drop out of their programs due to the excessive number
of hours they work in a week. This source relates to my thesis because students who decide to go
straight into post-secondary programs are able to get better jobs which will contribute to their
overall success in life. The topic of success is clear in this source because students who are
unemployed during post-secondary have a higher chance of completing their program than the
working students.
Labrianidis, L., & Sykas, T. (2017). Why high school students aspire to emigrate: Evidence from
Greece. Journal of International Migration and Integration, 18(1), 107-130.
http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12134-015-0468-3
The article written by Labrianidis and Sykas illustrates the idea of students wanting to
immigrate out of their home country in hopes of seeking education elsewhere. The authors found

that students were leaving Greece because of high education and career expectations as well as
what they excel at depending on their class status. Their research showed that highly skilled
immigrants come from foreign countries and achieve high levels of education that is used toward
highly skilled jobs. The authors found that once a foreign student moves abroad to study, they do
not go back to their native country because they would not receive the same opportunities. The
authors used percentages to understand the number of students migrating out of Greece as well
as how many immigrants go back home after they achieved their education. This article also
studied how many students from other parts of the world, like the UK or Australia remain in the
country after graduation. Their studies found that only 56% of Irish students remained in Britain
upon graduation. This article relates to my thesis because to achieve overall success in the future,
students will need to have an education plan that grants them success later in life. This article
will not be the main idea of my assignment, but it provides key ideas as to why students are
leaving their countries and why many highly ranked jobs are so diverse.
