BCFP 12 - #LandBack Current Events Assignment During this course you will present a current event for each term. This will be assessed as part of your term mark. You can work alone or with a partner in a group of 2. #LandBack has become a popular call for many Indigenous nations in Canada. Find a case / current event where this demand is being used OR find a current event where land was actually given back to a First Nation. Though still a relatively new and rare act, there have been a few cases where non-Indigenous people have provided their land or the profits from their land to Indigenous people or Nations. Choosing a Current Event: o Find 2 articles that talk about the same case / current event. Read them both. Send the two articles you chose to the teacher on MS teams chat before the presentation. Create a PowerPoint or other slide presentation on the issue: o First, What is the #LandBack movement? Give a who / when / when / where / why basic summary of facts from your news articles. o Second, dig deeper, What is the history of the land in question? Which Indigenous person or group(s) were involved? Which Nation(s)? Are there other non-Indigenous people involved? Which level of government is involved? If you find a story where the First Nation successfully regained territory, also explain, How long did the described process of sharing the territory or profits take, and what was it like? What did the settler(s) learn from this interaction? How did they benefit from this? Where on a map is the land in question located? What do you think about this story? Did any part of the story surprise you? Why? o Third, give an explanation of at least 3 different viewpoints/perspectives on the story, from both Indigenous and non-Indigenou perspectives. o Fourth, your own opinions on the story with a clear explanation why you think this. You do not have to agree, and could give different opinions with your own explanations.
