Fairy Tale Update
Objective:
You are modernizing the fairy tale you read in class.
Requirements:
1. Must be 3 pages front and back, double-spaced
2. Must keep the important elements to the story
àfor example, if you were doing Goldilocks and the 3 Bears,
you would need to have a girl who entered the house of
some
complete strangers and tried out all of their stuff.
3. Be sure to follow the plot of the story, but with a modern
twist
àfor example, maybe Goldie is a thief, and she’s looking to
steal the best television or maybe Goldie is record producer
and the 3
bears are really 3 rappers and she’s testing out
their different
style.
4. You can give a completely different twist to the end if you
want.
àfor example, maybe Goldie was in a “Bachelor” type of
show
and at the end she chooses one of the “bears” to be her
bachelor or
maybe she is a “black widow” looking for her next victim,
and she
kills off the richest of the “bears”.
5. Watch your grammar, punctuation, and your spelling!
These will
count!!

Book Club Activity
Teacher Guide
Objective: To give the students an opportunity to discuss the novel in a fun and engaging way, to increase
their enjoyment of the book, and to discuss elements within the novel.
Directions:
1. Break the class into smaller groups of 4-6. The students will stay within their group for
each of the 3 book club activities.
2. Hold a classroom book club over three different class days. You could do this all in one
week or you could spread this out over a period of three weeks. I would suggest these
activities after the reading of the book has been completed or nearly completed.
3. Grading will be based on student participation.
Book Club #1: Character Role-Play
1. Have students choose a character from the novel to represent. One student should play the
role of moderator.
2. The moderator is in charge of asking the assigned questions and facilitating discussion.
3. Students respond to the moderator as the character they were assigned.
Book Club #2: Novel Discussion
1. Pass out questions to the students. Each student should ask at least one of the questions
2. In this discussion, students will discuss events that happened in the course of the novel.
Book Club #3: In-Depth Discussion
1. Pass out questions to the students. Each student should ask at least one of the questions
2. In this discussion, students will discuss the their opinions and feelings towards the novel.
Book Club #4: Author Meet and Greet
1. Choose one student to portray the author. Students may need to take extra time to learn
more about the author and the origins of the book. Conversely, you could portray the part of
the author.
2. Students create questions to ask the “author” about the book. Discussion revolves around
the questions the students create.
Room Set-up:
To create a book club atmosphere, try one or more of the following:
*set chairs up in a circle
*move to a setting with couches or bring pillows in for the students to sit on during the
discussion
*provide snacks or have the students bring in snacks to enjoy during the discussion
