LECTURE NOTES Prepared by: Stephanie Ever C. Tapiz, BSED English II Topic: Learner-Centered Teaching Learning Objectives At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to: K: Explain and Define Learner-Centered Teaching. S: Demonstrate how Learner-Centered Teaching is important in a learning process through a role play. A: Value the importance of Learner-Centered Teaching and share it to the class. DEFINITION What is Learner-Centered Teaching? This approach is also referred to as student-centered learning and is designed to put the learner in control of their own learning journey, promoting greater engagement and better outcomes. It’s an approach that prioritizes the learner and places them at the center of the learning experience. As a teacher or facilitator, your responsibility is to guide and facilitate learning, while the learner takes responsibility for their own learning. Empowers learners to participate actively in the learning process. Methods for Learner-Centered Teaching There are various teaching methods a teacher can use that will suit and help facilitate learning. Good teaching will adopt methods to each learner based on an understanding of his or her unique characteristics. Student Choice One of the easiest ways is to allow student choice. Teachers can do this by offering students different methods to show or prove their learning. Active Learning Active learning is the implementation of activities that require student cooperation, individual work, and reflection on learning. Cooperative Learning Cooperative or group learning has been proven to increase overall student learning. Students are given opportunities to listen to the ideas of others and expand upon their own thinking. Inductive Teaching and Learning or Project-Based Learning Inductive teaching is an interesting yet beneficial method of instructing students. In a nutshell, teachers do not present instruction through traditional methods. Instead, teachers present the end result or necessary knowledge first. Then, students are asked to practice it through varying methods. One of the best ways to do this is to present students with project-based learning assignments. Project-based learning engages students in knowledge through completing assignments that are challenging and connected to real-world scenarios and situations. Students actively participate in learning, employ thinking skills, may work independently or in cooperative groups, and expand their knowledge on a particular topic or concept. 5 Characteristics of Learner-Centered Teaching 1. Learner-centered teaching engages students in the hard, messy work of learning. On any given day, in most classes teachers are working much harder than students. 2. Learner-centered teaching includes explicit skill instruction. Learner-centered teachers teach students how to think, solve problems, evaluate evidence, analyze arguments, generate hypotheses—all those learning skills essential to mastering material in the discipline. 3. Learner-centered teaching encourages students to reflect on what they are learning and how they are learning it. They challenge student assumptions about learning and encourage them to accept responsibility for decisions they make about learning; like how they study for exams, when they do assigned reading, whether they revise their writing or check their answers. 4. Learner-centered teaching motivates students by giving them some control over learning processes. Learner-centered teachers search out ethically responsible ways to share power with students. 5. Learner-centered teaching encourages collaboration. Learner-centered teachers work to develop structures that promote shared commitments to learning. References Flom, J.
