The challenges that nurses are experiencing in today’s human health needs may have changed the
roles of nurses including night-shift nurses. This qualitative research explored night-shift nurses’
challenges and the implications for quality nursing care. The participants were 14 staff nurses from
two different healthcare facilities in Iligan City. A strict ethical protocol was observed. Face-to-face indepth interview was employed. Verbatim transcription and translation of narratives were carried out
in an iterative process. Three emergent themes were formulated: 1) Physiological, 2) Nursing Practice,
and 3) Staffing. Workplace culture and climate pose leadership challenges toward safe quality nursing
care.

Novice nurses use procedural guidelines to make decisions based on Patricia Benner’s Intuitive-Humanistic
Decision-Making Mode (1984), but expert nurses use their intuition to guide them in decision making. Intuition
is regarded to be a legitimate and essential component of clinical judgment. According to Benner, it is
understanding without rationale. In the acute care setting, the use of critical thinking and clinical decision
making by nurses can make a significant impact on the care received by their patients. In 2006, research done
by Anita J. Smith suggested that intuition is not only a cognitive skill; it is also a concept that has multiple
dimensions found to be used not only by experienced nurses but novice nurses as well. She identified four
factors associated with intuition: (1) spiritual connections, (2) reassuring feelings, (3) physical sensations, and
(4) bad feelings. The main objective of this study was to determine whether the demographic profile (gender,
years of experience, and nurse-to-patient ratio) affects the use of intuition in clinical practice of staff nurses
assigned in medical-surgical units. Seventy-eight staff nurses working in the acute care setting, i.e., medicalsurgical wards, were purposefully surveyed in this descriptive correlational study. They answered the Smith
Intuition Instrument, which is an 18-item Likert-type questionnaire that measures the level of intuition. Pearson
correlation was used to determine the relationship between the variables. The findings show that there is a
positive correlation between gender and intuition, while there is no significant correlation between nurse-topatient ratio and intuition, and years of experience and intuition.

Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) are medical events in the form of unwanted side effects and not
necessarily caused by vaccines. AEFI in Indonesia with the highest percentage of 4% occurred in the Moderna
vaccine type. Using cross-sectional design, the study aimed to describe AEFI involving first and second doses of
Moderna vaccine among Covid-19 survivors and non-survivors. A total of 73 participants selected through total
enumeration were involved in the study. Results showed that the most common Moderna AEFIs reported were
systemic AEFIs: dose 1 (survivors), 8 people (100%); dose 2 (survivors), 7 people (87.5%); dose 1 (non-survivors),
58 people (89.2%); and dose 2 (non-survivors), 53 people (81.5%). Generally, the most common AEFI of Moderna
vaccines was systemic AEFI both at doses 1 and 2, among both survivors and non-survivors. Moreover, there
was no significant difference in AEFI reactions at the first dose between survivors and non-survivors, and at the
second dose between survivors and non-survivors.

The caring behavior of nurses is the core of professional nursing practice and the culture of the nursing
profession to meet patient satisfaction. Philosophical underpinning based on Husserlian’s thought and
descriptive phenomenological research design was used, with six participants in a private hospital selected
through snowball sampling technique. Collaizi’s seven-step methodological interpretation was used in the
analysis. Results showed that the nurses have seven caring behaviors: compassion, responsiveness, selfcontrol, thoroughness, critical thinking, comforting, and educating. It is recommended that nurses maintain
and improve their caring behavior, and that similar future studies conduct face-to-face interviews.

Work-related stresses are experienced by workers when they are confronted with demands and pressures
which do not match with their abilities and skills. A wide range of work situations may contribute to stress
of workers especially when the management has little support to them. Work-related stress has negative
impacts on individuals and organizations. Using descriptive design, the researchers adapted a questionnaire
from the American Institute of Preventive Medicine to assess the occupational stress level of 23 staff nurses
from four special areas (operating room, emergency room, delivery room, and intensive care unit) at Divine
Mercy Wellness Center. Results showed that the nurses have a low level of occupational stress. A significant
difference was observed in their stress level in terms of disagreement and indecision as well as time pressure
when they are grouped by area of assignment, and in terms of disagreement and indecision including work
overload when they are grouped by length of employment. The researchers concluded that it is necessary for
healthcare institutions and nursing organizations to improve the working conditions of nurses through direct
implementation of interventions or formulation of policies that would lessen nurses’ occupational stress.

FILIPINO NURSES’ QUALITY OF LIFE, WORK ENGAGEMENT, AND
COPING DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC: TRILOGY
OF CARING-BASED FRAMEWORK
Hazel N. Villagracia, RN, EdD, DNS

Patients, consumer-advocacy organizations, and regulatory and accrediting institutions have all expressed
concern about patient safety in the healthcare setting, especially for nurses. These initiatives have motivated
Prince Mohammed bin Nasser Hospital nurses and practitioners to assess and adjust routine activities that
contribute to a culture of patient safety and avoid medical mistakes due to misidentification of patient,
especially in countries where patients’ names are identical. In this study, the researchers used cross-sectional
survey and observational audit methodology to measure knowledge levels and compliance rates in proper
patient-identification procedures among nurses at Prince Mohammed bin Nasser Hospital in Saudi Arabia.
Results showed that the majority of the nurses (9, 81.2% 8 and 180, 65.9%) have a comprehensive knowledge of
procedure for identifying patient correctly, including the policy to identify patient using the two patient identifiers.
However, audit results revealed that the nurses used the two patient identifiers in just 40 observations (24%),
with the majority of them positively identifying the name of the patient only (130 observations, 76%) and not
their medical record number. The findings emphasized the importance of focusing more attention on patient
identification. Specifically, identifying the factors and improving the implementation of standard practice of
patient identification with new Standard Work Process for Identifying Patient correctly are described in this
article.
Mixed methods sequential explanatory design was used to investigate the interplay of Filipino nurses’ quality
of life (QOL), work engagement, and coping during Covid-19 pandemic. Nurses participated from July 2021 until
December 2021 in the online survey administered via Google Forms followed by a validation of their responses
through online platforms and face-to-face focus group discussions (FGDs). Quantitative research tradition and
thematic analysis with word cloud were employed for data analysis. This study revealed significant differences
in the participants’ QOL and select socio-demographic profile variables such as years of experience, income,
work engagement (WE), position, and years of experience; and a significant relationship between QOL and WE.
In analyzing the interview data, seven themes emerged such as Restoration, Equilibrium, Commitment, Hope,
Assurance, Resilience, God-fearing, and Engagement (RECHARGE), which were integrated into the trilogy caringbased framework. The pandemic has increased the need for nurses to receive all aspects of care, and with
RECHARGE framework development, caring can be incorporated into the existing hospital programs to make
nurses more engaged in work and find more ways to cope with adversity. Successful pre-pandemic workplace
interventions may not adequately support nurses at this time. Further studies are needed to identify all support
mechanisms to be given to them in preparation for any pandemic’s unprecedented challenges.

Diabetes mellitus exerts a major impact on third-world countries and is one of the most reported comorbidities
in Covid-19 patients. This meta-analysis was used to determine the mortality rates among Covid-19 patients of
Asian race having diabetes mellitus (DM) as comorbidity. Studies included where from six electronic databases
(PubMed, Google Scholar, Lancet, Biomed Central, ResearchGate, and Science Direct). Validity of the studies were
assessed using CASP, and ROBINS-I tool was used in the risk of bias assessment. Odds ratio of mortality rate
and survival rates were obtained using RevMan 5.0. Results showed that there were 277,828 confirmed Covid-19
patients, including 29,282 with DM. Covid-19 positive Asians with DM and other comorbidities obtained an OR
of 3.50 (95% CI 3.04,4.03) and Covid-19 positive Asians with DM only as comorbidity have an OR of 2.84 (95% CI
2.74, 2.95). The study concluded that there is a significant increase in the mortality rate of Covid-19 patients with
DM as a comorbidity. Public health interventions and more focused and tailored management with susceptible
populations of diabetic patients are recommended to decrease the mortality rate of the susceptible subgroups.

Post-stroke depression is common among post-stroke patients after experiencing significant physical disability
and psychiatric complications. Depression causes difficulty in concentrating, remembering details, making
decisions, including cognitive impairment. Depression can also make patients have suicidal ideation. One of
the interventions to help patients overcome post-stroke depression is a complex nursing intervention that
includes biological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects. This study aimed to determine the effect of
complex nursing interventions on depression among post- stroke patients. Using quasi-experimental design,
the researchers involved 42 purposively sampled patients who met the inclusion criteria and who were divided
by random allocation into the intervention and the control groups, with 21 respondents in each group. The
intervention group was given a complex nursing intervention with four home visits in four weeks, while the
control group received standard care from the hospital. Both groups were measured for depression before
and after the intervention using GRID-HAMD 17. Results of the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test for the effect of
complex nursing interventions on depression among post-stroke patients showed a p value of 0.001 with an
effect size of -0.67, which indicates a moderate effect size. The researchers concluded that complex nursing
interventions have an effect on depression among post-stroke patients. Complex nursing interventions are
therefore recommended for use with post-stroke patients both in the hospital and at home.

Increased human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection occurs in correctional settings, and its prevalence is
even greater than that in the general population. Inmates with HIV/AIDS are often exposed to discrimination,
violence, segregation, privacy and privacy violations, health service denial, lack of access to appropriate medical
care, and stunted treatment. Peer education with role play might reduce the stigma of HIV/AIDS among inmates.
Using one group pretest-posttest pre-experimental design, this study aimed to determine the effects of peer
education with role play on the stigma of HIV/AIDS by and in inmates. The Visser’s Personal and Perceived
Community Stigma Questionnaire was administered to 94 purposively sampled male inmates without HIV. Data
were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results showed a significant difference between the pretest
and posttest scores on stigma 1 (personal stigma; p=0.000) and stigma 2 (perceived community stigma; p=0.000)
after peer education by role play method was given. The researchers concluded that peer education with role
play method has significant effects on HIV/AIDS stigma. The results of the study could serve as a reference for
correctional nurses in preventing the stigma of HIV/AIDS by and in inmates.

The post-partum period is a critical period for mothers and babies. Post-partum mothers who are hospitalized
or confined in other health facilities are declared ready for discharge if they already know about treatment,
danger signs, activities to be carried out, and follow-up care at home. Using cross-sectional design, this
study aimed to determine post-partum mothers’ readiness for discharge from health facilities. A readinessfor-hospital-discharge instrument consisting of 22 aspects was administered to a sample of 140 post-partum
mothers. Results showed that there was still quite a lot of unpreparedness in the aspect of discomfort, physical
ability to care for oneself at the beginning of returning from health facilities, physical ability to care for babies
in the first days, knowledge about problems during home care, follow-up medical care for themselves and their
babies, and perceptions of assistance to do household chores. Post-partum mother’s readiness to return home
can be optimized through continuous education while the mothers are in the hospital and at home after their
discharge.

This comparative study aimed to determine the stress level among nurses assigned in critical care areas and
hospital ward areas who face daily struggles and stress. It also sought to investigate the factors that affect
their work-life balance and physical and mental stability. A survey questionnaire was administered to 21 nurses
working at Grupo Medico De Dios Hospital. Results revealed that critical care nurses had higher stress level than
hospital ward nurses. The stressors that contributed to the level of stress were determined by the subscales of
the expanded nursing stress scale used in the study. Considering the findings, the researchers recommended
that the hospital may consider developing an electronic patient charting system that would help ease the
nurses’ clerical work, reduce errors, provide a convenient way to assess patients, allow for clearer and readable
doctors’ orders, and facilitate making nurse notes and open communication. Hospital administration may also
consider giving paid off leaves and other mental and physical health benefits so that nurses would perform
better and be more loyal to their institution.

The occurrence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Indonesia is increasing in the productive age, affecting
human resources, work effectiveness, and the economy. The high prevalence of non-communicable diseases
is caused by unhealthy lifestyle and lack of activity and diet. Early detection of NCDs needs to be done by
monitoring blood sugar, uric acid, and cholesterol levels. The NCD monitoring program at Respati Yogyakarta
University is carried out every three months. Using descriptive design, this study aimed to determine blood
sugar, cholesterol, and uric acid levels of 42 employees and students at Respati Yogyakarta University who were
selected through convenience sampling. The results of monitoring NCDs through Posbindu Idaman showed that
the participants were at the normal level in terms of their blood glucose (88.09%), cholesterol (59.52%), and uric
acid (male at 21.42 % and female at 64.30%).

Artificial diabetes was introduced to healthy male albino wistar rats to establish the hypoglycemic effect of the
combined Moringa oleifera Lam. seed oil (MOSO) extract with royal jelly (RJ). Moringa oleifera Lam. seed oil was
afforded via Soxhlet extraction with hexane and subsequent phytochemical analysis was performed revealing
the presence of alkaloids and flavonoids. There were five treatment groups (pure MOSO, MOSO-10, MOSO-15,
MOSO-20, and pure RJ) and a negative control group used in this study. The treatment with 20% loading (MOSO20, Treatment D) of the seed oil extract in royal jelly was found to be the fastest to normalize the blood glucose
levels in seven days, followed by Treatment E, Treatment C, Treatment B, and Treatment A. Analysis of variance
and Tukey’s HSD post hoc analysis of data revealed that treatment groups had results which were significantly
different (p < 0.05). Results of this research can be used to explore the synergistic effects of MOSO and RJ in the
future.

In this study, Tetraethylene pentaamine (TEPA) in different amounts was loaded on the mesoporous carbon
with ultra-large pore volume and pore diameter. CO2 capture performance of TEPA-loaded carbon at different
temperatures was investigated. Pore structure and CO2 capture performance of the composite were analyzed
by nitrogen adsorption and desorption, scanning electron microscope and thermogravimetric analysis. Results
indicated that the porous structure of the mesoporous carbon was preserved even when the TEPA-loading
amount was increased to 100%, and TEPA was loaded uniformly on the inner pore channels. The porous structure
and high TEPA-loading amount endowed the material suitable for CO2 adsorption. CO2 adsorption capacity and
rate were high at 750C, the maximum CO2 adsorption amount reached 1.46 mmol/g, and the saturated CO2
adsorption amount was obtained in 3 minutes. Although the CO2 adsorption amount and rate decreased at
lower temperature, they still reached 0.92 mmol/g and 15 minutes, respectively, which were rather high for the
similar materials. Hence, the high-adsorption capacity and rate of the composite made it an ideal material for
CO2 adsorption in practice.

Cancer remains to be one of the leading causes of death in the Philippines and around the world. One common
therapeutic approach to inhibiting growth and proliferation of cancer cells is the use of chemotherapeutic
agents. However, many of these agents are presently placed in a predicament because of their drug resistance
and toxic effects to normal cells. For these reasons, research and development on new classes of anticancer
agents which exhibit efficient and selective toxicity is increasing attention. In the Philippines, DOH approved ten
herbal medicines for human use as home remedies for different diseases. Of the ten herbal plants, Quisqualis
indica, Carmona retusa and Peperomia pellucida have not been studied for their anti-cancer potential. Thus,
there is a need to discover their potential anticancer properties to provide opportunities in the discovery
of drugs against cancer. Four biological assays were used in the evaluation of the anti-cancer properties of
Quisqualis indica, Carmona retusa, and Peperomia pellucida. Results showed that the extracts where able to
inhibit angiogenesis in both the CAM and HUVEC assays. Moreover, the plant extracts were also able to decrease
the level of VEGFR (1 and 2) and CD-34 gene expression and increase TGF-β1 expression. The extracts also
decreased the viability of human breast cancer cells. This decrease in viability is attributed to apoptosis which
is characterized by extensive DNA fragmentation. Further studies may want to identify the bioactive compounds
present in the plants, including their possible effects on different cancer cell lines.

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused educational disruptions which compelled schools and universities to close
campuses. Most universities have shifted to online mode of delivery for teaching and learning to continue.
With distance online learning set to continue, it is an ideal opportunity to try out pedagogical approaches
that cultivate student engagement and empower students to be active learners. One promising strategy for
promoting active online learning is the fully online flipped classroom pedagogical approach. Flipping the class
effectively involves flipping teachers’ as well as learners’ mindset about online teaching and learning. Likewise,
attitude is a key factor to be considered in understanding and explaining differences in student performance
in Mathematics. Thus, this pretest-posttest quasi-experimental research was conducted to determine the
online learning mindset, Mathematics outlook, and academic performance of college students in a fully online
flipped Math course. Quantitative analyses of the data revealed that the participants’ online learning mindset,
Mathematics outlook, and academic performance improved significantly after the implementation of flipped
learning approach. Results also showed that the participants’ attitude towards online learning is related
significantly to their academic performance. Moreover, qualitative data disclosed that the approach increased
students’ motivation and confidence in learning Math, improved their engagement in guided, independent,
and collaborative in-class activities, and deepened their understanding of Mathematical concepts. Hence, the
flipped learning approach can transform classes into dynamic, engaging, interactive, student-centered online
learning environment.

jpizarro@spup.edu.ph
In the Philippines, the Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index (CMCI) dataset accumulated by the Department
of Trade and Industry from 2011 to 2020 were used to assess the level of competitiveness of all the local government
units (LGUs) in the country. The data provided a very rich source for data mining for the crafting of decision
support systems for the LGUs based on the CMCI’s four pillars, namely: economic dynamism, government efficiency,
infrastructure, and resiliency. This study focused mainly on the 10 indicators of government efficiency. This said
pillar centers on the provision of services and aid by the government which are both effective and reliable, allowing
for long-term growth in the economy’s productive capacity. It requires the government to be an institution that is
not corrupt, which can thus safeguard and enforce contracts, apply moderate and reasonable taxation, and actively
regulate the country’s economy. This study determined the level of government efficiency of the 28 LGUs in the
province of Cagayan, northern Philippines with respect to the pillars’ 10 indicators. Furthermore, it also investigated
whether there exist significant differences in the level of government efficiency of the LGUs when they are grouped
by type of municipality and the congressional district to which they belong. The data utilized in this study were mined
from the CMCI online portal and considered only the 2022 dataset. Generally, the LGUs in Cagayan possess high level
of efficiency in terms of compliance with national directives and with ARTA Citizens Charter, and low efficiency with
respect to their capacity to generate local resource, capacity for health services, recognition of performance, peace
and order and social protection. There is no significant difference in the level of efficiency of the LGUs in Cagayan
when they are grouped by type of municipality and congressional district affiliation. In summary, the province of
Cagayan is said to have average performance in terms of the government efficiency indicators.

Results showed that from startups to small businesses right through to huge brands, a huge number of the
businesses benefitted from their e-commerce websites where they sell their products or promote their services.
In today’s competitive and convenience-focused society, no longer do consumers venture to the high street to
buy items; instead, they tend to shop from their homes. For this, e-commerce has become a flexible solution
for both businesses and buyers. The Covid-19 pandemic has paved way for the emergence of many online
businesses worldwide as well as the increasing demand for online products and services, in consideration of
health and safety protocols.

These recent years, financial management is not only for companies but also for households as it is now a
priority towards achieving family prosperity. Financial management should be carried out by a family earlier so
that in the third phase (retirement age or ≥55 years), it can enjoy life. This study used mixed research methods
to explore the factors that influence the success of family financial management. Independent and prosperous
families in Sleman District, Yogyakarta, selected through purposive sampling, participated in the study. Results
showed that to achieve success in family financial management in the third phase, households need to observe
the five factors, namely, financial planning, responsibility of family members, personality traits or human nature,
financial literacy, and characteristics and backgrounds of the respondents. By considering these five factors, a
family could ensure family resilience and welfare.

Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) is one of the strategies of DENR that supports sustainable forest
management, especially in the uplands. It is an avenue for addressing the prevailing poor socio-economic
conditions of the uplands. Considering the project site is part of the 20 poorest of the poor provinces in the
country, projects that address both poverty and sustainability in forest management are being implemented.
Thus, the Philippine government launched EO 660 to pursue sustainable upland development anchoring on
food, wood, and non-wood security and economic development. It addressed hunger mitigation, poverty
reduction, and environmental protection. Part of the implementation of the CBFM-CARP project was the conduct
of benchmarking, and after five years of implementation, an impact assessment was done to determine the
substantial and significant changes of the project as to the socio-economic status of the beneficiaries and the
environment in the project site. The impact analysis provided an in-depth and comprehensive scale of analysis
and interpretation to ensure a conclusive result of impact assessment. Hence, this impact assessment analysis
of the project was conducted.

Tacit knowledge in a higher institution library includes a series of intuition and inspiration that a librarian
uses in exploring solutions to various problems. Thus, limited source of knowledge or information is a critical
factor in the failure to provide accurate information. The main problem of the business intelligence (BI) system
is capturing tacit knowledge and using it as one of the sources for data analysis to enhance analytic results.
Unstructured data can be defined as tacit knowledge in the form of data and information presented in the
Knowledge Management System (KMS), and the cognitive business uses both structured and unstructured data
with highly sophisticated analytical techniques to identify, evaluate, and recommend a business plan of action.
The idea of being able to capture knowledge from different sources can be very beneficial to the BI system. This
paper explored ways of extracting tacit knowledge from librarians to enhance data sources to be used in the BI
by looking into the library’s academic services, which use much tacit knowledge for answering questions with
the requirement of data analysis as online or offline queries.
The new normal changed how the world reprogrammed their precautionary actions. Academic institutions are
one of those that were greatly affected. Students were made to adjust in the new mode of learning. Non-teaching
personnel are subjected to skeletal work schedules. The teachers were made to adapt the work-from-home
arrangement. This scenario created unexpected impact on the health and wellness of the academic personnel
and students. This study used exploratory sequential mixed methods. During the new normal, students and
employees frequently engaged in health and wellness practices on the dimensions of physiological requirements
for healthy nutrition, physical activity to improve health and motor function, and psychosocial needs. These
helped them manage the problems and stress brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite frequently exercising
health and wellness practices, participants still encountered problems in budgeting their finances due to
unstable prices of basic necessities and additional pandemic-related expenses. Stress also caused observable
changes in participants’ eating and exercising habits, which negatively affects their physical and physiological
well-being. Students are stressed and exhausted as a result of online class problems, and as a result of having
to comply with increasing study loads. These challenges impede the participants’ ability to maintain a healthy
and positive well-being.

Healthcare workers (HCW) are assumed to have easy access to healthcare services, yet the utilization of
preventive services is low. The importance of understanding the utilization of periodic health examinations
has a significant impact on health workers’ general health, wellbeing, and workforce. A case-control study
was conducted among HCW. A total of 321 HCW participated in the study. Factors that are associated with the
non-utilization of periodic health examinations among HCW include night shift duties, no free medication/

Adolescent health and wellbeing must be at the center of efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) as adopted by the World Health Organization in 2030. Another approach is needed by first looking at the
quality of life of obese adolescents and their physical activity behavior as a step in providing suggestions for
health interventions for obese adolescents. The study used cross-sectional design and involved 80 overweight
adolescents (13-19 years old), who were selected using snowball sampling. The questionnaire underwent
validation by experts, marking a CVI of 0.9. Results showed that the majority of the overweight adolescents are
in the low quality of life category at 85%. Most of the adolescents engaged in physical activities moderately
at 57.5%. Moreover, there is no significant difference between the level of physical activity and the variable of
quality of life for overweight adolescents (p=0.3). Considering the results, various health programs need to be
proposed to increase adolescents’ abilities and skills in terms of quality of life, as well as to increase their
interest in doing physical activities regularly.
Lack of knowledge causes adolescent reproductive health problems. This study aimed to ascertain the
correlation between adolescents’ knowledge and behavior in maintaining reproductive health. Using crosssectional design, the researchers involved 260 senior-high-school students as participants. Results showed
that 90% of the male students and 93% of the female students had good knowledge of reproductive health.
The participants’ most positive behaviors include reducing humidity and improving the cleanliness of their
reproductive organs, at 85% and 80%, respectively. On the other hand, the participants’ most negative behavior
was taking immediate treatment, at 55% and 90%, respectively. Moreover, there was no significant correlation
(p values at 0.585 and 0.724). Considering the findings, the researchers concluded that increasing adolescents’
self-awareness of reproductive health is essential.

Family is one of the factors influencing adolescent mental health. Adolescents often have problems with
closeness to parents, communication, openness, and support, and those with poor mental health can be at risk
for self-harm. An intervention that can be used to increase the interaction between parents and adolescents
is spiritual coping. This study aimed to determine the level of mother-adolescent interaction and its effect on
adolescent mental health after the application of spiritual coping interventions. Using pretest-posttest quasiexperimental design, the researchers involved 52 public health volunteers and their adolescent children. The
Parent-Child Interaction Questionnaire-Revised (PACHIQ-R) and Mental Health Inventory (MHI) questionnaires
were used to collect the data. The data from the two groups before and after spiritual coping interventions were
described through the Mother and Child Heart Connection (MCHC) Caring System. Results of the independent
t-test showed a p value of 0.036 (p>0.05), indicating a significant difference in the level of interaction and
mental health between the experimental group and the control group before and after the intervention. The
researchers concluded that the application of spiritual coping intervention through the MCHC positively affected
the interaction between mothers and adolescent children. Spiritual coping increased mothers’ acceptance and
awareness that could enhance their interaction with their children and improve the mental health condition of
adolescents.

The stigmatization of mental illness harms recovery from severe mental illness, and prejudice and discrimination
can lead to internalized stigmas, such as thinking and acting in ways that reinforce negative stereotypes. This
study explored the lived experiences on community stigma related to psychiatric illness towards raising nurses’
awareness of mental health, stigma in the community, and the implementation of therapeutic programs they
can use to help improve society. Based on the analysis, there is no universal definition of a positive or negative
coping strategy because it depends on the context of the situation. It is important to choose positive and
negative coping strategies based on people’s ability to solve stressful problems in a maladaptive or adaptive
manner.

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems offer effective support for online learning and teaching, including personalizing
learning for students, automating teachers’ routine tasks, and powering adaptive assessments. However, while the
opportunities for AI are promising, the effects of AI systems on the interactions between students and teachers
are still elusive. In online learning, student-teacher interaction has a profound effect on students’ satisfaction
and learning outcomes. The study used the qualitative approach and was participated in by 52 teachers and
students. Findings showed that the participants envisioned adopting AI systems in online learning can enable
personalized student-teacher interaction at a certain level but at the risk of infringing on social boundaries.
Although AI systems have been positively recognized for improving the quantity and quality of communication,
for providing timely, personalized support for large-scale settings, and for improving the feeling of connection,
there were concerns about responsibility, work, and feedback. Based on the discussion, AI has fostered the
improvement of instructional communication, engagement, and support towards optimal learning. With the
utilization of AI in online learning, student-teacher interaction becomes engaging and intuitive, innovative and
creative, towards an improved overall standard of education.

A learning design that recently emerged with growing interest among instructors is the Universal Design for
Learning (UDL). UDL is a set of principles for course design and delivery that gives all learners equal opportunities
to succeed. This study utilized a questionnaire to assess the instructors’ extent of practice of UDL principles
and open-ended questions to gather data about participants’ realizations, challenges, and suggestions. Results
showed that the instructors practice the principles of UDL to a very great extent as assessed both by the
instructors and the students. Teacher-participants realized that UDL improves student learning by providing
greater opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills while the student-participants realized
that UDL promotes inclusivity, respects diversity, and gives students equal opportunity to succeed. However,
instructors have encountered challenges such as lack of student interest, insufficient digital learning tools,
not internet-ready classrooms, while students have encountered problems such as limited time to accomplish
assigned tasks, unclear presentation of topic, difficulty of accessing content, uninteresting teaching strategies,
and difficult assessment tasks. Teacher-participants suggested the following to improve the utilization of UDL:
knowing students’ strengths and weaknesses, upskilling teachers’ digital competence, upgrading educational
technology, strengthening internet connectivity, and adopting flexible learning approaches. Likewise, studentparticipants suggested to make content more accessible, present content clearly, use varied teaching strategies,
utilize more engaging learning activities, create a friendly environment, give sufficient time to accomplish tasks,
and employ more authentic assessment tasks. Truly, UDL puts high values on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The demands of the global workforce and the rapidly changing trends in education challenge the role and
competencies of those who enter the teaching profession. This descriptive-correlational study aimed to
determine the language proficiency, digital competence, and teaching aptitude of pre-service teachers. It
involved 31 second-year and 42 third-year Teacher Education students. Data were collected through the Language
Proficiency Test, a Standardized Aptitude Test for Teachers (SATT), and the Digital Competence Questionnaire.
Results showed that the participants’ proficiency level in listening and speaking was described as ‘advanced’
while their proficiency level in reading and writing was ‘upper intermediate.’ The participants are characterized
as ‘practitioners’ in all the subcomponents of digital competence. The participants’ teaching aptitude in the
intellective components ranged from ‘average to high average,’ while it was generally assessed as ‘average’ in
the non-intellective components. Furthermore, results showed that significant differences in the participants’
listening, reading, and writing proficiency were attributed to academic performance, while significant differences
in speaking proficiency and teaching aptitude in the non-intellective components were influenced by year level.
Significant relationships were likewise found between speaking proficiency level and digital competence, and
between reading and listening proficiency level and intellective teaching aptitude. Based on the findings of the
study, a Teaching Enhancement Program was proposed.

In the context of the expansion of “go-out” enterprises setting branches overseas or undertaking international
projects under the circumstances of China’s “Belt and Road” Initiative y, this study focused on analyzing
the current status and problems in the development of this type of enterprise. One of the major problems
restricting the enterprises to go out was the gap between the supply and demand of qualified internationalized
technical talents. Based on the analysis of the causes of the current problems in aspects of weak support for
the enterprises domestically and abroad, the study generated a three-dimensional internationalized technical
talent cultivation system that would address the difficulty. Feasible approaches supporting to build up the
system were introduced as renovations and construction through co-operations between the enterprises and
vocational education institutions under the guidance and assistance of authorities. Moreover, optimizing interior
vocational education cultivation system and exploring exterior enterprise-oriented internationalized talent
cultivation opportunities respond to the challenges of providing the necessary labor force of internationalized
talents for the increasing need of the global market.

This study used Digitized Reading Materials for Elementary grade Readers (DReaMER), an intervention material
which aimed to improve the skills in predicting outcomes among Grade 5 learners at Baraoidan Elementary
School for the SY 2020-2021. Using quasi-experimental design, particularly one group pre-test-posttest design,
the researcher conducted a 35-item digitized pretest and posttest. Results showed that there is a great increase
in the mean scores of the participants in the posttest. The computed p value is less than 0.05 level of significance,
which indicates that there is a significant increase in the pupils’ posttest scores compared to their pretest
scores. The computed Cohens D value affirms the huge effect size of the intervention material. The researcher,
therefore, concluded that the use of DReaMER is effective in improving the predicting outcomes skills of the
participants. It is recommended that teachers through their school administrators adopt the said intervention
for maximum dissemination and utilization. A parallel study may be conducted to validate the effectiveness of
this intervention material and find other ways to improve instruction.

The study aimed to assess instructional leadership practices, school culture, and organizational image among
private basic education institutions in Ilocos Sur, Philippines. Results showed that the schools’ instructional
leadership practices, school culture, and organizational image were rated as Very Good. The relationship among
instructional leadership practices, school culture, and organizational image was found as highly significant,
which implies that instructional leadership practices are great factors that would contribute to the foundation of
school culture and directly affect the positive school image. Considering the findings, the researcher proposed
a continuous improvement plan that would help enhance the instructional leadership practices, school culture,
and image among private basic education institutions in Ilocos Sur.

STUDENTS’ CONSTRUCTS OF A DESIRABLE EDUCATOR: A PRIVATE
HEI’S BASIS IN FORMATION PLAN RE-FRAMING
Juana C. Rivera, PhD
Human Resource Management, St. Paul University Philippines
jrivera@spup.edu.ph
The study aimed at investigating how the 3,466 college volunteer students viewed their teachers towards
determining the constructs of a desirable educator. The teachers evaluated via online modality came from the
University’s different schools/units. The researcher used simple frequency, mean distribution, and thematic
analysis along knowledge, skills, attitude, and aptitude. Results showed that the teachers’ performance in the
areas of evaluation ranged from very satisfactory to excellent. Generally, the students’ constructs of a desirable
educator include having the right attitude to become sympathetic to students and observing punctuality and
regularity in class attendance. Moreover, a desirable educator must have the essential knowledge and skills
combined with teaching aptitude. The study concluded that the teachers possess the standard knowledge, skills,
aptitude, and attitude. However, they still need to improve on teaching strategies, competencies, classroom
management, personal disposition, decorum, and qualities. The findings served as a basis for the proposed reframing plan, which is anchored on spirituality in the teaching profession.

In most nations, the entire process of learning has been switched to an online mode. Due to the novel coronavirus
pandemic, many universities and colleges around the world have resorted to online learning. The purpose of
this study was to determine how online learning has benefitted students and to explore the factors affecting the
students’ online learning at St. Paul University Philippines. Using the descriptive design through online survey
method, the researcher collected the data from 195 students. Frequency count, percentage, rank, weighted
mean, and thematic analysis were used in the data analysis. Results showed that the majority of the students
spent at least 1,201 pesos and above on their internet connection. In terms of source of internet connection,
most of the students used PLDT Home Fiber and smartphones for online learning. Microsoft Teams was the
learning platform used all the time by teachers aside from other platforms in delivering lessons and facilitating
activities. Also, the majority of the participants do online learning at home. As regards the status of their
internet connection, most of the students have a moderately stable connectivity. Using the learning platform
is relatively easy for the students. Moreover, the students assessed that they take benefit from online learning
to a great extent. The students believed the interaction among students, teachers, technology, environment,
and support system affect the effectiveness of online learning to a great extent. Further, the problem mostly
encountered by the participants during online learning is power interruption. Considering the findings, the
researcher recommended that students, instructors, and parents work hand in hand to maximize the benefits of
online learning. Internet providers may consider improving their services to ensure stable connectivity. Future
research could explore the efficacy of online learning.

Higher education institutions (HEIs) around the world place much emphasis on developing the research skills
of their students as these are crucial skills demanded of learners and professionals in the 21st century. At the
graduate school level of any HEI with a university status, the research skills of students are expected to be honed
optimally as the graduate school is expected to be the oasis of new knowledge generation where students’
research outputs, theses, and dissertations are all meant to advance the frontiers of the expanse of knowledge,
skills, attitude, and values (KSAVs) in their respective fields of endeavor. This study was done grounded on the
researchers’ desire to understand the incoming graduate school students’ research skills and to be able to
have basis in formulating intervention or enhancement activities meant to develop their full potential. The
study sought to determine the research profile of the participants and assess their extent of research readiness
with respect to practical skills, research skills, problem solving, thinking and communication skills, personal
attitudes and professional ethics, dissemination and roles and functions. Results revealed that the majority of
the participants had very limited number of full-blown researches undertaken, number of research seminars/
conferences attended, number of researches presented at research fora and number of researches published in
journals. Moreover, the study found that the participants had “very high” practical skills in research and “high”
readiness in terms of problem solving, thinking and communication skills, personal attitudes and professional
ethics, dissemination and roles and functions. Although the participants’ self-assessment of their research
readiness is high, the participants’ lowest ratings along publication in major local and international journals
need to be reinforced.

Lifelong learning skills broadly support students’ critical thinking, self-supervision, and social relations and
interactions, enabling the quest for continued education and career drives. The skills are means by which
students gain mastery of academic content and transform knowledge into action. Information technology skills
are ever dynamic, such as programming, web development, data analysis, graphic animation, systems security,
cloud computing, and machine learning. These skills are essential and incorporated into the Bachelor of Science
in Information Technology program to equip graduates with the skills needed for employment. Using descriptive
design, the researchers aimed to assess the lifelong learning skills and competencies of the participants in
identified areas. Results showed that the majority of the participants are employed in IT industries, government,
and non-government agencies as technical support specialists. The skills needed in the workplace are those that
focus on technical support. Also, the majority of the participants found out that web and mobile development
are easy to perform. One of the main skills and competencies in the IT field is web and application development.
Moreover, networking is one of the difficult tasks in performing work as assessed by the participants. The
majority of the participants found difficulty in developing their skills in other courses integrated into the IT
program, thus the need for them to have more exposure in industry-based projects to further enhance the skills
and expertise required by the industry. Further, the trainings and workshops for faculty should be funded by the
administration to strengthen their instruction, lifelong learning skills, and competencies.

The study aimed to assess the performance of St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP) from the four perspectives
of the balanced scorecard, namely: internal processes, learning and innovation, customer, and financial
perspectives. It also explored the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of SPUP in the balanced
scorecard, towards coming up with a proposed balanced scorecard. Using quantitative descriptive method, the
researcher collected the primary data through survey questionnaire. The secondary data include the financial
statements, enrollment summary, faculty profile, faculty performance evaluation, number of employees, results
of the study on external productivity of BSBA/BSA graduates, scholarship for students, board exam results,
and number of resigned full-time faculty in academic years 2015-2016 to 2017-2018. One hundred ninety-three
(193) participants, including office staff and maintenance personnel, faculty, lay administrators, students, and
parents, were selected through stratified sampling. Data were treated using frequency count, mean, and ratio.
Results showed that the scorecard of SPUP had positive results in the internal processes, learning and growth,
and customers’ perspectives. Moreover, the University adopted aggressive working capital management from
the financial perspective of the balanced scorecard brought about by low liquidity and short-term solvency. It
also had less performance from the financial perspective of the balanced scorecard.

STYLE AND THE READER IN THIRD GENERATION E-LITERATURE:
A LITERARY AND AFFECTIVE STYLISTIC ANALYSIS
OF SELECTED INSTAPOETRY
Ma. Francesca M. Lingan
Cagayan State University, Carig Campus, Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, Philippines
francescalingan@gmail.com
The advent of the internet age has brought about rapid changes in the forms of art and entertainment that
humans immerse themselves in. One area that has been gaining prolific traction in the evaluation of these
changes is Instagram poetry. Hence, the present study aimed to explore stylistically the literariness anchored
in the style and the reader of instapoetry using online data extraction of readers’ comments of some selected
instapoetry from the social media platform Instagram. It also sought to develop a framework for a literaryaffective stylistic analysis of instapoetry. Findings revealed that instapoetry is largely free verse, which confirms
non-difficulty as both an aesthetic and a writing style that can be read as an inquiry into itself. Lexico-semantic
devices such as amplification, assertion, repetition, and phonological devices, such as consonance, assonance,
and cacophony, were found to correspond to readers’ largely positive expression of resonation. Instapoetry’s
literariness and the readers’ text experience, which overlap in the stylistic analyses of the instapoetry, were found
instrumental in the framework development. The framework developed proposes a more detailed description in
the stylistic study of readers’ text experience of instapoetry. Finally, the praxis of literary and affective stylistics
supports the notion of examining both linguistic and cultural interfaces in contemporary literature as well as
the consideration of stylistics as an interdisciplinary venture.
