Letter of Intent Physics has always been my passion. Furthermore, the beauty of mathematics used to explain complex concepts in physics nurtured my passion for both these sciences and how they emulsify. Majoring in physics and minoring in mathematics, I am an honor student at Middle East Technical University which is one of the best universities in Turkey. This passion in maths and physics led to a desire to contribute something to the physics society by training students and developing their passion for physics and math. This passion for physics started in high school when I chose physics and math major in high school and my succcess as a student resulted in me representing my school in competitions. One of these competitions was Iran’s National Laboratory Competition which is held yearly for chemistry, biology, and physics. Two girls from higher grade and I were selected to represent our high school in Tehran, Iran. The result of this competition changed my path in life and gave me an ultimate goal for life when they proclaimed to our advisor that regardless of the innate capability of our team, they prefer to choose a team comprising of male students for the physics lab competition. This led to a relentless dedication in the field of physics to hopefully one day be a role model for girls from my country to study subjects they are passionate about regardless of old-fashioned stereotypes that imply that the gender of people is a factor in the potential to achieve success. Studying at Middle East Technical University in Turkey, where most of the top students in Turkey study, put me in an intensely competitive environment that encouraged me to learn more and get one step closer to the role model I have always wanted to be. Furthermore, the courses that I have taken in university such as optics and quantum physics have shed light on the path I want to take as a future physicist. To elaborate, the foundation of lasers’ working principle studied in optics and impossibles which became possible on a quantum scale made me wonder about the innovative applications that can be discovered based on this branch of physics in the future. Your company has been working on one of these innovative applications of quantum physics called superconducting qubits for gate-based quantum computers which is what I was looking forward to working on using my physics and mathematics background. While studying at university, I wanted to not only learn physics, but also to teach it to students of all different ages worldwide to demonstrate the beauty of physics and math and how we can use them to come up with innovative solutions for old problems as a future physicist, mathematician, or engineer who will add something new to science society. Plus, in the past two years of online tutoring, I practiced explaining complex topics in simple words to students, which has helped me to comprehend complex new topics that I encounter. I feel this has adequately qualified me to take on new challenges that may require significant cognitive capability. As my goal for the future is to become a physicist who can inspire young girls and add something new to the science society while learning more about the possible innovations humankind can have with the aid of quantum computing, I believe your company and this project that is oriented around superconducting qubits for quantum computers is a great opportunity for me to use all my knowledge that I gained in several years of successful academic education to be helpful to achieve a great result in this project. Thanks for considering my application. Souran Bakhshzad
