Hip-hop/Street dance
Street dance refers to a dance style commonly
performed outside dance studios such as streets, parks,
yards, raves, nightclubs and other open areas. This
dance which was also described as vernacular dance
originated in New York in the year 1970. Different forms
of street dance evolved overtime. This dance is
improvisational and social in nature which encourage
interaction and contact with the spectators and other
dancers.
Street dance have different styles, namely Breaking,
Popping, Locking, Krumping, Tutting, Shuffling and
Waacking. Street dancing is also a best fitness workout

Lesson 2:
Styles of Street dance
1. Break dance a style of hip-hop dance
originated in South Bronx, New York in
the early 1970’s. This dance is also
known as B-boying or breaking which
involves complicated leg movements
and more acrobatic movements such
as head spins, back spins, hand glides
and wind mills.

Popping a dance style created by Sam
Solomon and his crew the Electric
Boogaloo’s. This dance involves contraction
and relaxation of muscles that causes jerk in
the body.
3. Locking a dance style created in
1969 in Los Angeles, California. It was
created by Don Campbellock
Campbell and was popularized by
his crew. It involves a freezing
movement from a fast movement,
holding your body into a position
then continuing the same
movement speed as before. A
locker’s movement is characterized
by frequently putting stops or freeze
at different points in the music that
you want to accent with your body.

Krumping a dance style originated in
South Central Los Angeles, California by the
African-American community. It is
characterized by free, expressive,
exaggerated, and highly energetic
movement involving the arms, head, legs,
chest, and feet. This a style of dance that
tame temper and releases anger.
5. Tutting a dance style created by Mark
Benson aka King Boogaloo Tut. It is a
dance style that uses geometric shapes
forming right angle using our body parts
which makes the movements creative
and unique. The movements were also
based in mimicking the Ancient
Egyptians arts of people’s position.
6.
Shuffling a dance style originated in
the late 1980’s in Melbourne, Australia. It
also known as the Melbourne Shuffle or
Rocking. The movements of this dance
are characterized by fast heel and toe
movements that suits various types of
electronic music. People who perform this
dance are often referred to as rockers
due shuffling to rock music in the early
90’s.
