HISTORY: TIMELINE PRE-COLONIAL 1. 3000-2500 BCE- Austronesian Migrations reached the Philippines. 2. 897-775 BCE- The Manunggul jar was used as a secondary burial jar in Palawan. 3. 800-1000- Hindu-Buddhist influences arrived in the Philippines from Southeast Asia. 4. 1200-1350- The Golden Tara, a statue of a Hindu goddess, was made by a goldsmith from Mindanao. Spanish Colonial Era 1. 1453- Fall of Constantinople, Ottoman Turks took over, barring the European from the trading routes to the east. 2. 1492- Italian voyager Christopher Columbus reached the Americas. He called the natives “Indians” believing that he arrived at India. 3. 1498- Vasco de Gama, a Portuguese sailor reached India by sailing through the Cape of Good Hope in the southern tip of Africa. 4. 1511- Portuguese forces captured the Muslim port of Malaca in Southeast Asia. 5. March 12, 1521- The Magellan expedition, after passing through the South American continent and crossing the Pacific Ocean, arrived in the central part of the archipelago. 6. 1543- The Villalobos expedition arrived in the archipelago and gave it the name Las Phelipinas in honor of then crown prince, Philip II. 7. 1565- King Philip II decided to colonize the country and sent Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. The expedition sailed from Mexico and arrived in Cebu. 8. 1571- Manila was taken by Spanish and Visayan forces under the leadership of Martin de Goiti. Lgeazpi transferred from Panay Island and he made Manila the capital and base for further expeditions. Intro. Shortened the travel time from Europe to the Philippines and vice versa. 5. 1872- The Cavite Mutiny took place and was followed by State repression in which prominent Filipinos were arrested, imprisoned, exiled, or executed including the Gomburza priests. 6. 1882- The bilingual nationalistic newspaper Diariong Tagalog was established with Marcelo H. Del Pilar as editor. 7. 1887- Jose Rizal’s incendiary novel Noli me Tangere was published in Berlin, Germany. 8. 1889- The bimonthly Filipino newspaper, La Solidaridad, was established in Barcelona, Spain with Graciano Lopez Jaena as editor. 9. 1892-Rizal returned to the Philippines to lead La Liga Filipina but after 3 days, was imprisoned and exiled to Dapitan, Zamboanga. 10. 1896- January 20; Graciano Lopez Jaena died in Barcelona, Spain. July 4; Marcelo H. Del Pilar succumbed to tuberculosis in Barcelona, Spain. December 30; Jose Rizal was executed by a firing squad in Bagumbayan, Manila.
