Adams, Tasha Chapter 2 09/09/2023 Soc 11 Chapter 2 1. The three social welfare issues that stand out most to me are the issues with homelessness, drugs, and mental health. Regarding the issues with homelessness, in my town there are a lack of outreach programs to assist the homeless. The programs that are out there are designed only for a specific type of person. There are many homeless people that need programs that offer harm reduction, medical care, and necessary supplies. Not everyone is ready to get off the streets but that doesn’t mean they don’t need help. The issue with drugs is once again the programs are designed only for a specific type of circumstance, not many harm reduction programs are around or help detoxing unless its court ordered. Mental health has always been an issue and there is more help now than before but there still needs to be more outreach programs that reach the homeless community. 2. Three of the social values that speak to me are Justice, respect, fairness. Justice is always going to be on my top because so many times I see it fail. A key value for me is to have justice for those that society has written off or forgotten. Sometimes that’s with the courts, sometimes it’s just between the individuals. This gives a person back their dignity and self-respect in many cases. Respect is big and should always be given and so many times it’s expected but not given. A man who is homeless is still deserving of respect and dignity. Fairness is important because everyone deserves to be treated fairly and so many times, they aren’t this causes anger and resentment that builds to violence. 3. I am involved in the homeless community. I give out necessary supplies, I assist in helping find services and fill out paperwork, I have resolved many conflicts so that the police don’t get involved. This is important work for me because once I was homeless and forgotten. This is a feeling I wish on no one. There hasn’t been much help for me to get on my feet and it has been a hard struggle. There should be more help and by me going back out to the community I am showing that it is possible to become human again without losing who you are.
