Name:
Dylan Singh
Questions:
1. What are your interests/motivations in taking this course?
I would love to learn more about asian culture and history and how they go
about their lives.
2. Based on the “Course Description”, what is the main topic of the class,
and what kinds of materials and methods will we use?
We will be learning about the history of asian immigration from 1848 to present,
as well as the experience of race in the U.S and Asian American identity. We
will be using materials such as readings and video clips.
3. Where and when will you be able to communicate with the professor?
Through email or office hours on zoom (schedule appointments).
4. What are the required texts for the class, and where can you find digital
copies of the readings for each week?
1) Asian America: A Sociological and Interdisciplinary Reader and Asian
Americans: A 5-Part Documentary Series. You can find copies in the
course schedule.
5. How many papers are required for the course, and what are they about?
2 papers. The first paper is conducting an interview with someone about
identity or you can interview yourself. The second paper is composing a profile
of an Asian American neighborhood or under-studied/represented Asian
American population in New York City.
6. How do you fulfill the class participation requirement, depending on if you
are choosing to complete the class synchronously, asynchronously, or a
hybrid of both?
You have to respond to the discussion board questions for the week based on
the zoom meeting discussions.
7. How many quizzes are required to complete the course, and when do they
occur?
2 quizzes and they occur in a 3 weeks notice. (10/18 and 12/13)
8. What are you interested in learning about in this course? (Look at each of
the modules’ topics, and choose 1 module that you would like to facilitate
the discussion for your classmates)
I choose module 4 because there have been a lot of racial stereotypes, not just
against asians, but all individuals. I have previous experience with this situation
and think I can elaborate more on this topic.
9. Discussion is an important component of this class, to help us better
understand and relate to the sociological issues in this class. Read the
section on “Discussion Facilitation” and “Classroom Environment”. What is
one thing you should be mindful of for productively participating in class
discussion?
You should be mindful of leading the group discussion and discussing key
themes of the reading.
10. Do you have any further questions about or disagreements with the
syllabus?
No, but I am looking forward to a great semester in this class.
