Paraphrase a text using one’s own words Paraphrasing expressing the content of the passage in your own words and style, using about the same number of sentences as the original. Since the problem usually originates during note-taking, it is essential to minimize the material recorded verbatim (Lester, 2006, p. 46). Students frequently use direct quotation in taking notes, and so therefore they tend to use many quotations in the final research paper. Only about 10% of the final paper should be quoted. Minimize your use of direct quotation while taking notes. Doing so will ensure that you will avoid plagiarism. GUIDELINES in PARAPHRASING DOs: 1. Record the source of the text using the APA format. 2. Read the original passage again and again until you have grasped the authors’ main points. 3. Check in the dictionary the meaning of any unfamiliar word which you think is crucial to understanding the author’s arguments. DOs: 4. Set aside the original passage and start to paraphrase, making sure that you include the examples provided by the author. Your paraphrase must use about the same number of words or sentences. 5. Check your version with the original text to determine if you have captured the essential information. DONTs: 1. Don’t follow the style of the author by merely changing some words from the original. 2. Don’t provide your own interpretation or opinion but only present the author’s view.
