Learning Objectives
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, students are expected to:
1. Contrast an original and a plagiarized paraphrase.
2. Enumerate how one can avoid plagiarism when writing academic essays.
3. Use own words and style in paraphrasing another’s ideas.
4. Evaluate a good paraphrased material
5. Paraphrase a text using one’s own words
Paraphrasing
expressing the content of the passage
in your own words and style,
using about the same number of sentences as the
original.
Take note:
Include the details or examples used by the author in
explaining the main idea.
Why is it important?
enables you to
understand better the
text by simplifying how
the main ideas and
details are expressed
helps you in writing
your own academic
essays:
organizing facts
and opinions from
different sources
making your own
arguments
Warning
If you don’t know how to paraphrase, you will be tempted
to just cut and paste information from other’s work in
your own, which is considered to be an act of plagiarism.
Let's Paraphrase
Students frequently use direct quotation in taking notes, and as
a result, they overuse quotations in the final research paper.
Probably only about 10% of your final manuscript should appear
directly as quoted matter. Therefore, you should strive to limit
the amount of exact transcribing of source materials while
taking notes.

Which is a better paraphrase?

In research papers, students often quote
excessively, failing to keep quoted material down
to a desirable level. Since the problem usually
originates during note-taking, it is essential to
minimize the material recorded verbatim (Lester,
2006, p. 46).
Students frequently use direct quotation in taking
notes, and so therefore they tend to use many
quotations in the final research paper. Only about
10% of the final paper should be quoted. Minimize
your use of direct quotation while taking notes.
Doing so will ensure that you will avoid plagiarism.
GUIDELINES in
PARAPHRASING
DOs:
1. Record the source of the
text using the APA format.
2. Read the original passage again
and again until you have grasped the
authors’ main points.
3. Check in the dictionary the meaning of any
unfamiliar word which you think is crucial to
understanding the author’s arguments.
DOs:
4. Set aside the original passage and start to
paraphrase, making sure that you include the
examples provided by the author. Your paraphrase
must use about the same number of words or
sentences.
5. Check your version with the original text
to determine if you have captured the
essential information.
DONTs:
1. Don’t follow the
style of the
author by
merely changing
some words
from the original.
2. Don’t provide
your own
interpretation or
opinion but only
present the author’s
view.
Original: Her life spanned years of incredible
change for women as they gained more rights
than ever before.
Paraphrase: She lived through the exciting
era of women's liberation.
Original: The price of a resort vacation typically
includes meals, tips and equipment rentals,
which makes your trip more cost-effective.
Paraphrase: All-inclusive resort vacations
can make for an economical trip.
Original: "There is nothing inhuman about an intelligent
machine; it is indeed an expression of those superb
intellectual capabilities that only human beings, of all
the creatures on our planet, now possess." (from "In
Defense of Robots," by Carl Sagan)
Paraphrased: Artificial intelligence results from human
beings' unique intellectual talents. Thus, the technology
should not be regarded as inhuman (Sagan 234).
Why is it important to observe
paraphrasing as one of the ethical
consideration in academic writing?
What
questions
do you
have?
