What This Module is About
Welcome to the world of Cookery!
Cookery is an art and science of preparing food for consumption by using heat. Cookery
is an age-old practice. A primitive human must have found a piece of meat or vegetable
cooked in the bushfire by chance. He must have found it edible, chewable and easy to
consume. Probably, he even must not have cooked deliberately until he knew how to create
fire.
The simplest method of cooking was holding a piece of meat or vegetable in the fire
directly, which is still in practice, with a little sophistication. From the age-old cooking practices
to cooking for fine dining, cookery has come a long way with the evolution of humans, their
skills, diverse cultures, and the equipment. Today, cookery is an inseparable part of our lives
that
rules
our
tongues
and
hearts.

Learning to cook will help you understand the world of cultures, customs and flavors.
You will also learn life skills like eating healthy, budgeting your money, and cleaning. Save
some cash, spending money on pre-packaged meals gets too expensive for a young person
and families on a budget.
Individuals who are entrepreneurial can diversify their skills by working as caterers.

What Is It
Basic Cookery Concepts
Cooking or cookery is the art, technology, science and craft of preparing food for
consumption. Preparing food with heat or fire is an activity unique to humans. It may have
started around 2 million years ago, though archaeological evidence for it reaches no more
than 1 million years ago. (Cooking - Wikipediaen.wikipedia.org › wiki › Cooking)
Theory of Cookery explains the techniques and technologies involved in cooking food.
It explores cooking as a chemical process that involves the blending of various ingredients in
the right proportions to produce a finished product, namely a dish that is ready to eat.
Cooking food properly helps to avoid food poisoning. Most raw foods feature food-borne
pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, parasites and viruses that can seriously harm and kill a
human being. Cooking ensures that all the micro-organisms are destroyed, which make food
safe for human consumption (www.paranetinfo.com › learn-the-importance-of-cooking)
Career Opportunities in Cooking
3
The culinary arts offer a wide array of career opportunities for people with an interest in
cooking. Although training and certification adds credibility to those entering the field, it is not
essential. Numerous successful chefs and culinary professionals do not hold a formal
credential and entered the field as entrepreneurs or through apprenticeship programs. Those
with an interest in obtaining professional designations can get certified through culinary
associations. (https://careertrend.com/career-opportunities-in-cooking-13637584.html
Types
Chefs work in the hospitality industry and hold specialty positions such as executive chef,
Sous-chef and pastry chef.
Restaurant chefs can break into the business without attending school through on-the-job
training. Many restaurants and hotels offer entry-level apprenticeship opportunities where
trainees can gain hands-on experience and learn the latest cooking techniques.
In addition to pursuing apprenticeship programs, entry-level chefs can enhance their
qualifications by obtaining their certification from accredited institutions. The American
Culinary Federation Certification Program awards Certified Culinarian designations to
qualified candidates.
Features
Individuals who are entrepreneurial can diversify their skills by working as caterers.
Caterers plan and supervise the food service for parties, banquets or social events. Caterers
generally run their own business and must also be good at administrative duties. In addition
to being responsible for providing a menu, caterers may also be in charge of decorations and
hiring wait staff for an event. Depending on the size of a business, caterers may prepare food
on or off-premises and can specialize in main dishes or desserts. Qualified caterers can obtain
a Professional Catering Executive (CPCE) designation from the certification from the National
Association of Catering Executives (NACE).
Significance
If you are a talented cook with a formal training, you can play a significant role in
shaping the culinary field, and have a highly rewarding career by working as a culinary
instructor. Instructors promote the field of culinary studies and help to advance the careers of
promising students. Organizations like the American Culinary Federation (ACF) provide
numerous cooking scholarships and a certificate program for culinary instructors. ACF offers
14 certification programs including apprenticeship programs for its members.
Alternatives
Individuals with an interest in food and culture can work as food historians, in research
and travel related fields. Food historians investigate the trends and transformations in food
production and the culinary arts. They work as freelancers or consultants, and use archival
materials to recreate new recipes. Food researchers can work as curators at museums or
teach at educational institutions. Other career opportunities include working as travel guides
by taking tourists to interesting culinary destinations around the world. The International
Association of Culinary Professionals welcomes the membership of food
historians.(https://careertrend.com/career-opportunities-in-cooking-13637584.html)

What Is a SWOT Analysis?
SWOT analysis is an incredibly simple, yet powerful tool to help you develop your
business strategy, whether you’re building a start-up or guiding an existing company.
SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.
Strengths and weaknesses are internal to your company—things that you have some
control over and can change. Examples include who is on your team, your patents and
intellectual property, and your location.
Opportunities and threats are external—things that are going on outside your
company, in the larger market. You can take advantage of opportunities and protect against
threats, but you can’t change them. Examples include competitors, prices of raw materials,
and customer shopping trends.
Purpose of a SWOT Analysis
The purpose of a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats framework is to
get managers thinking about everything that could potentially impact the success of a new
project. Failure to consider a key strength, weakness, threat or opportunity could lead to poor
business decisions.
What are examples of opportunities?
Opportunities refer to favourable external factors that could give an organization a
competitive advantage. For example, if a country cuts tariffs, a car manufacturer can export
its cars into a new market, increasing sales and market share. Threats refer to factors that
have the potential to harm an organization.
5
How to Do a SWOT Analysis
1. Determine the objective. Decide on a key project or strategy to analyse and place
it at the top of the page.
2. Create a grid. Draw a large square and then divide it into four smaller squares.
3. Label each box.
4. Add strengths and weaknesses. ...
5. Draw conclusions.
What is the most difficult part of the SWOT analysis?
Opportunities – This tends to be the most difficult part. It is easier for some start-ups as it was
an opportunity that caused them to start. But for a going concern, this can be a challenge.
A SWOT analysis can help you identify opportunities that your business could take advantage
of to make greater profits. ... Conducting a SWOT analysis will help you understand the
internal factors (your business's strengths and weaknesses) that will influence your ability to
take advantage of a new opportunity.
