1.Overview
SHANGHAI SHENKAI PETROLEUM EQUIPMENT CO., LTD. is
a professional company engaged in manufacturing the petroleum
equipment and tools and it started to produce various kinds of BOPs since
1974, with a long history and powerful product development and
manufacturing capacity; with self-contained product quality inspecting
and testing device, it has been elected the hi-tech enterprise by Shanghai
Science Commission for years. 105Mpa BOP sets produced by it have
been entitled the Importance New Product of Shanghai Municipality and
National Importance New Product. At present, the BOP sets produced by
this company are made in series applicable for land offshore oil drill
platform.
This company employs the integral QHSE management system, the
product design and manufacturing process comply with the national
standards of API Spec 16A—Specification for Drill-through Equipment
and GB20174—Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries - Drilling and
Production Equipment - Drill-through Equipment and this company has

Certification and get the permit of API Spec 16A product trademark.

1.2 Application
Ram BOP with hydraulic control is a key part of well-control equipment. It’s used for
controlling wellhead pressure during well drilling, workover and testing etc., preventing well
blowout effectively and realizing safe construction. It can be used for the following:(Figure 1):
 With proper pipe ram sealing the annular space between casing and drilling string when there is
pipe in the hole;
 With blind ram sealing the well head completely
 When the well head is closed, use the kill manifold and choke manifold connected to the spool
and the outlet of the body doing mud circulating, choking and releasing, well killing etc.;
 Necessarily, drilling tolls can be hung on pipe ram.
 With shear/blind rams shearing the drilling tools to seal the well in some special circs.

3. Working Principle
3.2 Principle of Sealing
Ram BOP consists of some main parts such as

4.Structure Features

5 Structure and feature of main part(s)
5.1

5.1.1 Type S Ram:
Structure feature of Type S ram:(see figure 5)
Top and bottom of ram are symmetric. When top surface of the ram rubber has been worn seriously, another
side can be used to prolong rubber life. Ram assembly consists of ram block, holder, rubber and retracting screw.
Floating performance of the ram is good. Because the ram seat (ram holder) and the ram body (block) are
separated, the ram can move slightly in the holder to ensure positive alignment of the rubber faces as face seal
contact occurs. There is 3mm installing clearance between the ram body and the ram seat. When shutting off the
ram, the holder extruded top rubber distorted to bulge up to enhance effectiveness of sealing and reduces the wear of
the ram rubbers.

Procedure of changing rubber for Type S ram
Unscrew the two ram bolts and take down the holder.

Remove the two ram rubber bolts.
Take out the top seal from the groove of the ram block

Remove the whole rubber from the rams.

Before installing, clear the ram block, the holder, the
rubber and retracting screw and smear oil unit. The procedure

of assembling is in the opposite order. Don’t push out the top
seal rubber excessively and avoid wearing and scratching the
ram rubber rapidly.

The ram rubber is single-face composing seal in which the top seal and the face seal are separated.
Ram assembly consists of ram block, holder, face seal, top seal and retracting screw.

It reserves the advantage of good floating performance of model s ram.

Top seal and face seal that are separated can be changed independently depending on different
damage situation. So it’s easy to assemble and disassemble.

For various size drilling tools, only need to change relevant top seal and face seal including
shear/blind ram, other element are universal.

Variable Bore Ram
Some BOP is featured variable bore ram, which can seal
different size drilling tools in stated range without opening
BOP. So far, provide 3-1/2″~5 ″(13-5/8″-70Mpa),
structure model is H(figure 6). Disassembly and assembly,

5.2 Manual-lock System
5.2.1 Ram Manual-lock System
All ram BOPs are equipped with manual-lock system. Manual-lock system closes and locks the ram by the
manual wheel, it consist of locking shaft, ram shaft, manual-operated rod and hand wheel etc. (Figure 8)
Its applications as follows: when hydraulic system is fail, rams can close by manual system timely to seal well
head; when sealing well for a long time, lock rams in closing position after close ram with hydraulic pressure. Turn
the hand wheel to the right, drive the locking shaft rotating through operating rod, because the locking shaft
shoulder presses against the cylinder head, it can’t go back, thus it can only drive the ram shaft to move toward the
well head center and locking the rams. (Figure 8 Ram)
Note:
Manual-lock system can only
close the rams, can’t open. If you want
to open rams closed by manual system,
you must unlock the system to original
position and then open the ram with
hydraulic pressure. It is the only
method
to
open
rams,
operation
procedure as following:

Turn the wheel hand to the left
untilmanual-lock
end, then turnsystem
back 1/8~1/4 circle
to avoid the locking shaft blocking at
the unlocking position
when the
temperature changes.

Open the rams with hydraulic
pressure.
5.2.2 Automatically Radial Hydraulic Locking System:

Principle:
Automatically radial hydraulic locking system pushes the dowel pin to lock the ram shaft
(figure 9) by oil pressure in the locking cylinder, which is installed behind the main cylinder, and
vertically ram shaft. Since the oil piping of both the locking cylinder and the main cylinder are
shunt-wound,dowel pin will lock the ram shaft automatically when close the ram. Because the
incline angle can lock by itself, the ram won’t become loose along the ram shaft if there is no oil
press to unlock the locking cylinder.
Only hydraulic take effect if the ram is to be opened. At first, unlock the locking cylinder, the
ram shaft reback and through the hole in the middle of dowel pin, then the ram open completely.
Ram open and close, lock and unlock is isochroous with the main cylinder’s open and close ram.
Needn’t other operation.

Normally, hydraulic locking location has been
debugged before leaving factory. If the ram is wearing a
bit after using, repair the ram shaft tail’s incline and
dowel pin’s incline.
5.3
Side Door Seal System
When the rated working pressure is more than 70MPa, door seal can use advanced
floated seal system(Fig 10、Sheet 7), it can make the door stud’s torque less than general door
seal about 20%~30%, ensure the seal reliable when it is working. The labour strength is also
obviously decline when we open the side door.
When the rated working pressure is less than 70MPa, side door seal can use steel
grouping seal rings.

5.4 Ram Shaft Seal Structure and Ram Shaft Secondary Seal System
Seal structure of ram shaft are double directions seal to prevent medium in well flowing into the hydraulic which protects
hydraulic oil from being polluted and leaked, and reduce the wear of pump-valve element. The secondary seal system is
installed at ram shaft, when medium in well leaks out from the weep-hole; the normal seal failed and shall apply
secondary seal to remedy. Unscrew the plug in secondary seal hole, clockwise turn the piston screw with proper tool,
force the lower clubbed plastics seal grease into the sealing surface through the radial hole of the separation copper case,
forming the forced seal. Inject the seal grease until nothing leaks out from the weep hole, the capacity of injection should
not be over, and otherwise it will increase the wear of ram shaft and the resistance of opening and closing ram. If the
hydraulic oil in the cylinder leaks out from the weep hole, the sealing element in the ram shaft cylinder has failed, the
sealing element shall be changed.

6. Method of Installation
6.2 Pressure Test Running after Installation:
The installed ram BOP and the assembled well
equipment are performed hydraulic pressure test
for inspecting the reliability of all connections
and the seal characteristics; it can be used after
the test is good.

Each ram should be checked by closing and
opening twice for each controlled by the driller’s
console and remote control platform to inspect
correspondence of opening and closing with
practical operation and correctness of lines
connections. And air in the oil line should be
removed.
 Test the manual lock system to close and lock the
rams for inspecting their flexibility and
reliability. Note that manual –lock system can
only close the rams, but cannot open the rams, if
you want to open the rams you must unlock the
system manually and then open the ram with
hydraulic pressure. Before manually closing, the
relevant hydraulic control valves must be turned
to their “closed” position. When locking and
unlocking, turn the hand wheel to the left or right
until dead end, then turn back 1/8~1/4 circle, and
put a card on the hand-wheel to note the circles.
6.1 Installation:

Ram BOP shall be sealing tested under rated
working pressure before use and be transported
to well site after the test is good.

Install it according to well control specification
requirements of BOP combination form.

Installation orientation should be: The hand
wheel and operation rod of manual-lock system
should be located at the two sides of the derrick
door. The outlet flange of the body should face
side door in order to observe the leaking of the
ram shaft packing leaking export.

Manual-lock system shall be fully installed and
fixed and put a card on the hand wheel to note
the closing circles.

Ram size used in the BOP must be complying
with the drill tool used in the well and mark the
ram size on the driller’s console and remote
control platform to avoid from wrong
installation.

7.Operation and Caution
7.1 The ram BOP is used to seal off the drill’s tool,
which has the same size with pipe ram or the blind
ram during the blowout. Closing well for a long time,
lock ram with locking system hand-control locking
situations shall be marked on control platform to
prevent wrong operation.
7.2 When open or close side door, controlling
main-fold hydraulic pressure must be released to
protect hinge bracket O-ring. Ram movement is
not permitted on the side door bolt released to
protect ram, ram shaft and hinge from damage. For
protecting wellhead, no matter ram BOP is fixed
on wellhead flange or not. The two side doors
cannot be opened simultaneously.
7.3 Prohibit releasing well pressure by opening ram.
Before opening ram BOP, check if the manual-lock
system kept in unlocking position each time. And
after that, check if the ram remaining fully opened
(fall back to the body) and it cannot stay in the
middle position to prevent ram from drilling tool
bumping.
7.4 Only the ram shaft-sealing element is leaking
seriously, the secondary seal system is used to
inject the seal grease when emergency. The seal
grease of injection is not over but stop leakage to
prevent the ram shaft and the sealing element from
damaging. If possible, the ram shaft seal element
shall be changed at once, can not depend on the
secondary seal to contain the well pressure for a
long time
7.5 When there is drilling tool in the well, prohibit
closing the blind ram.

7.6 After reaching objective interval, the rams
should be opened and closed one time ever day to
see if they are flexible. After the drill string is
pulled out of the well, should check whether blind
ram open and close is flexible, whether manual
lock system is in gear.
7.7 When the rams cannot closed or opened under
the normal control pressure, can treat with on the
base of analyzing reason seriously. When
requirement, you can open the passby vavle of
control system main-fold to increase the pressure
and use directly accumulator pressure 21MPa to
control it. Under the specific circumstance, use
gas-fluid pump to inflate directly the pressure to
31.5MPa to control it. Before using the hinge
pressure, turn off the stop valve and cannot use it
for a long time.
7.8 After usage of BOP, keep BOP ram opened
fully for easy repair.
7.9 At least one set spare ram which has the same
size with the being used ram should be prepared at
well site to change the damaged ram in time.
7.10 Note: Keep hydraulic oil clean.
8.Servicing and Maintenance
8.1 Maintenance Notes:

After every testing at site, remove the hydraulic pipes of ram BOP and block off
bore with blockage. Clear outside of BOP and ram house completely and coat
surface of bolt hole, ring groove, top sealing of ram, bottom and side supporter
and guide ribs, door hinge with water-proof lubricating oil.

Gather and case the connections such as gasket, bolt, nut and special tools to
prevent being lost.

Screw tightly the stud nuts in timely in case loose stud nuts.

Keep hydraulic oil clean and prevent dirty into the cylinder, which avoid to
damage cylinder and piston.
8.2 All rubber spare parts shall be
stored reasonably as following:

Edit number according the time
transported in the storehouse and
always use the oldest rubbers first.

Rubber must be stored in a free
state in dark and dry room,
prohibit putting them in the open
air. Rubber cannot be compressed.
It is better to put the rubber in a
wooden box. O-ring cannot be
hung on the wooden post.
 Rubber cannot contact corrosive,
away from electric motor and high
voltage equipment, because these
can easily produce ozone to
corrode rubber.
8.3 Replacement of ram assembly and ram sealing
rubber:
Ram assembly and ram sealing rubber are the key
part sealing well in a BOP. If damaged, BOP is
useless in sealing well. So it is very important to keep
it well and replace it in time if there is damage in
sealing surface. Procedures of ram rubber
replacement:

Open the ram completely with hydraulic oil.

Remove bolts that retain the side door. Note
when BOP installed on well side, door bolt
cannot be removed if pressure exciting in hole.

Pull out ram assembly from ram shaft tail.

About ram rubber replacement refers to 5.1
introduction of ram assembly replacement.

8.4 Repair and maintenance of oil cylinder
assembly:
Procedures of cylinder assembly disassembly:

Open the rams completely through hydraulic
pressure first. If side door is in opened state,
close side door and at least screw a bolt at the
opposite side of hinge bracket.

Put a clean basin under cylinder to prevent oil
from flowing on ground.

Remove cylinder cover studs and nuts, screw
off cylinder cover, take out retainer ring and
take down locking shaft-sealing ring in
cylinder cover.

Drive out locking shaft from cylinder cover
(refer to fig 8 Ram Locking Structure)

Remove cylinder.

Release fixed screw in piston locking cap.

Remove piston lock-cap and pull out piston
lightly.

Open side door, take off ram, and pull out
piston rod (ram shaft).

Remove retainer and take out ram shaft

8.7 Daily Maintenance
Please check the jamming situation of the shell cavity when have to operate the ram assembly
over working pressure of 3.5MPa (5000psi)
Please operate and test the BOP according to API RP53 standard once a week.
Warning: Please DO NOT close the pipe ram assembly or variable ram assembly when there isn’t
any drill string in the well so as to avoid damaging the ram rubber.
8.8 Operating Maintenance
Please dismantle the BOP once a year or half a year in cold regions.
Clean all the parts, DON’T use metal brush to clear the seal position.
Replace all the sealing rubbers, gaskets, and O rings.
Decide whether to change it according to the actual situation of ram rubber in ram assembly.
Maintain or replace the damaged metal parts.
Wash the piston rod when dismantle the BOP, measure the degree of curvature of the hook
position, which should be small than 1mm, and carry on Ultrasonic Test. (if degree of curvature
over 1mm, should consider replace it )
