A Bomb to Remember
The bomb was far more devastating than anyone had imagined. Once the rescue workers= walked into
the city, it was clear that there were no survivors. The buildings that once stood tall and proud, were
now nothing more than a pile of rubble. During times of despair, most people turn toward each other for
comfort and agree that they will stand together. On this day, however, the losses were so great that
nobody said anything at all.

Forces other than damaging winds are at work inside tornadoes. Sometimes, as the twisting
funnel passes over a house, the walls and ceiling burst apart as if a bomb had gone off inside. This
is caused by the low air pressure at the center of a tornado.
Unfortunately, heavy rain and hail often occur in thunderstorms that later produce tornadoes. So
people frequently shut all windows to protect their property. This may cause far worse damage
later. For the same reason, the door of an underground storm shelter must have an air opening
for relief of pressure. Otherwise, the shelter door might be blown out when a tornado passes over
it.
Another cause of deforestation is forest fires that destroy hundreds of trees in many places around
the world. Some forests are replaced by exotic2 plants which are not suitable for the environment
because they shed a lot of dry leaves that act as firelighters. This makes the place a huge fire
hazard that might cause great damage to the close forests.
The problem of deforestation contributes3 to the greenhouse effect that increases the speed and
severity of global warming. Trees are large stores of carbon dioxide, and when they are burnt, they
release this gas. Consequently, there will be an increase in the carbon dioxide level in the air which,
in turn, is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect.
A company has designed a very simple laptop that is powered by a wind-up mechanism so that it
can be used in areas which don't yet have electricity. Assuming that at least 100 million laptops
could be ordered, the final price tag would be no more than 100 dollars. The plan for governments
and charities is to buy these laptops and distribute them to children in the poorest areas of the
world. It is not yet clear what kind of software will be installed on the laptops, but it will surely
include one or two educational games.
One of the difficulties with the plan is what families are likely to do with the laptops. The hundreddollar price tag is equivalent to an adult salary for three months in many cases. These families are
much more likely to try and sell the computer and get money to buy grain, fertilizer or food, than
to let their kids play with it in the evenings while the rest of the family sit listening to their
stomachs rumbling. Thus, international organizations should raise awareness about the value of
keeping and benefiting from these laptops.
