Hybrid Solar Inverter Comparison Chart
Common hybrid solar inverters also known as multi-mode inverters are at the heart of any simple, cost effective home battery storage
system. Hybrid inverters are essentially a solar inverter with an integrated battery inverter/charger. These modern inverters use energy
meters and software which can be programmed to determine the most efficient use of your available energy. Learn more about hybrid

Home battery and off-grid energy storage systems can be divided into the four categories below:
1. Off-grid and Hybrid Multi-mode Inverters
2. All-in-one Battery Energy Storage system BESS
3. Hybrid solar inverters
4. Battery systems - energy storage
Hybrid inverters are the simplest and most economical way to add battery storage but they do have some limitations, the main being
the limited surge or peak power output (refer to the comparison chart below). Some hybrid inverters do not have back-up power
capability or the backup power is very limited so only small (essential) loads can be backed up in the event of a blackout. For adding a
battery to an existing solar installation there are several specialised AC coupled hybrid inverters such as the Sunny Boy Storage from
SMA. Another option is by adding an AC battery system such as the Tesla Powerwall 2 or Sonnen ECO.

• DC coupled HV - Only compatible with High Voltage (HV) battery systems such as LG Chem RESUH or BYD HV.
• AC coupled - Battery Inverter used for AC coupling or retrofitting a battery (used together with a solar inverter).
• Load Shifting = Storing solar energy or off-peak charging of batteries to be used during peak times.
• Weather rated (IP65) = Can be installed outside, preferably a semi-protected location out of direct summer sun.
• Peak Shaving = Also called peak lopping is the ability to reduce peak demand from the grid.
• Mobile App control = Mobile phone app used to monitor and configure the system via network/wifi.
• Cloud monitoring = Remote system monitoring and data logging via web interface.
• DC Optimisers = Panel mounted optimizers to provide individual panel power optimization and monitoring.
• Digital I/O = Digital Inputs and Outputs for load control such as hot water systems.
• PV O/S = Solar PV over-sizing allows for a larger solar array to be connected to the inverter.
