Is it a state of mind? More Common than You Think 1 in 5 adults experienced a mental health concern in the past year. Mental Health is Integral When we are mentally healthy, we can realize our abilities, cope with stress, work productively, and contribute to society. More than a State of Mind Having good mental health is more than the absence of illness. Rather, it's a state of holistic well-being. How Do I Maintain Positive Mental Health? Practical tips and advice Acknowledge your feelings. Connect with others. Develop Coping Skills Take a deep breath, then relax. Embrace the five senses. Be in touch with your thoughts and feelings. Holistic Healing Treatments for mental health problems vary. It can include a mix of therapy, medication, and a support system. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE Opening up about your mental health will help you to show how you really feel, improve your relationships, and overcome challenges in every aspect of your life. WHAT CAN HAPPEN IF A COLLEAGUE IS UNABLE TO TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH? IT MIGHT LEAD TO... ANXIETY STRESS ISOLATION HOW TO IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE Here are some of my suggestions. CREATE A MENTAL HEALTH POLICY A mental health policy can help promote wellbeing, support everyone, etc. ENCOURAGE OPEN CONVERSATIONS Make sure there is good communication between both teaching and non-teaching personnel PRIORITIZE WORKLIFE BALANCE Encourage everyone to set boundaries so they can spend time with their families, etc. ASK FEEDBACK Empower everyone to actively contribute and provide feedback on how to improve mental health. TIPS FOR TEACHERS Practicing Self-Care Staying healthy in mind and body is essential, especially in this current state of the world. What is self-care? Self-care is any activity we actively choose to do to take care of our physical, mental and emotional well-being. Why do 01 we need to 02 practice selfcare? Our well-being is important no matter the circumstance or state of the world. Self-care helps us manage stress better and allows us to be more productive. Taking care of ourselves helps us keep a good work-life balance. Areas of Self-Care Mental Tending to your mind by practicing mindfulness and learning continuously Physical Tending to your physical body by keeping it healthy Emotional Staying in touch or fully engaging with your emotions Social Staying connected with family and friends Mental Self-Care TAKING CARE OF YOUR MIND 01 Set a routine. Schedule time for online classes as well as time for reviewing lessons and doing homework. 02 Take breaks during the day. Take the time to go offline and do other things not related to classes. 03 Practice mindfulness and take time for mentally-relaxing activities as well as activities that stimulate your creativity. SELF-CARE ALSO MEANS BEING PATIENT WITH AND KIND TO YOURSELF. Self-care is something we enjoy doing and not something we feel forced to do. Emotional Self-Care 01 Acknowledge your feelings and know that they are valid. Write them down in a journal or share them with someone. 02 Practice gratitude. Think of at least three things you are thankful for every day. Physical Self-Care Get enough sleep Eat well and eat healthy Exercise regularly Keep a bedtime schedule to give your body the rest it needs to recover. Nourish your body with healthy food and keep yourself hydrated. Set aside at least 30 minutes a day to workout or to simply move your body. Social Self-Care 01 02 Maintain connections with other people Reach out to someone every day. Call or message a family member or friend just to check in. You can also think of selfcare as taking care of yourself so you can better take care of others. Self-care activities can range from different activities. The important thing to remember about self-care is that it is about listening to what your mind and body need. Physical Self-Care Examples: Eat a healthy meal Engage in exercise Go for a walk Drink water Practice good sleep hygiene Have a cup of tea Sit in the sunlight Take a shower or bath Mental Self-Care Examples: Practice mindfulness Take a break Play video games Listen to music Read a book Listen to a podcast Reflect on things you are grateful for Spiritual/Social SelfCare Examples: Pray Call/text a friend Connect with nature Meditate Engage in self-reflection WORKSHOP!
