PROPOSED FIRE SERVICE STATION ABAKPA NIKE ENUGU ABSTRACT This thesis report is properly documented to facilitate the presentation of the proposed fire service station. The existence of fire service station in Nigeria and its system of operation which enhances the design of proposed station. Although there are some various problems which are to be tackled like ventilation, circulation, zoning and other services. Nevertheless, there are several goals that are achieved through the study and design of fire station by providing good circulation system, good ventilation, adequate services and good elevation that will help to promote the confidence and trust of the people. All these are achieved through proper integration of the background study of fire station, creation of possible entrance of fire appliance different from its exit and also through installation of water hydrant and overhead tanks at appropriate location within the site to enhance sufficient water supply. Furthermore the result of the design report was comprehensive and legible for easy understanding of fire station, its purpose and method of operation. Finally if all this are integrated into the design, the station will achieve its aim and good working environment. CHAPTER ONE 1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Fire: A friend to man and a threat to humanity. The word “FIRE“ is one of the most dreaded expressions in every language because it has proved to be as dangerous as its usefulness. Controlled fire is useful to man but uncontrolled fire is one of man’s worst enemies. Thousands of lives and properties are lost each year through uncontrolled fire. Fire Service: The Federal Fire Service(FFS) is the principal agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria, established by an Act of Parliament mandated with the sole responsibility of mitigation, prevention and extinction of fire and other emergencies of life safety as well as perform other sundry duties as delegated by the Honorable Minister of Interior. The Architectural problems a fire station face are inadequate landscaping, poor ventilation, inadequate amble space for effective maneuvering of vehicles within the station and in relation to the highway In other to solve this problem, passive design strategies (landscaping, opening and shadings etc) and space analysis have to be adequately applied in the fires station. What is Passive Design? Passive design is a design that works with the local climate to maintain a comfortable temperature in the home. With passive design, building features such as orientation, thermal mass, insulation and glazing work together to take advantage of natural sources of heating and cooling, such as sun and breezes, and to minimize unwanted heat gain and loss. Passive Design Strategies for Hot Humid Climate: The passive design strategies that would be applied into this design are building orientation, zoning, landscaping, openings and shading, building materials, passive cooling strategies 1.2 STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM The problem of this project are indoor thermal comfort, circulation and space in existing fire service stations and this can be solved in my design using these strategies of adequate thermal comfort and proper space analysis 1.3 AIM OF THE STUDY The aim of this study is the application of passive design strategies and proper analysis of spaces in the design of fire service station in Abakpa, Enugu State 1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The objectives to achieve the aim of this study are: 1. To study the passive design strategies to enhance Indoor thermal comfort in hot humid areas. 2. To review the concept of space analysis and configuration 3. . To propose the design of a fire service station applying passive design strategies and proper analysis of space. 1.4 OBJECTIVE Objective of the fire station are to provide the following 1. A good maintenance section, 2. Provide rooms large enough for the storage of chemicals, fire extinguishers and other equipment 3. To provide a drill tower which is architectural and a good training ground for the students and workers in the fire station. 1.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS 1. What are the passive design strategies that will enhance indoor thermal comfort in hot humid areas? 2. What is the concept of space analysis and configuration? 3. How can passive design strategies and proper space analysis be applied in the design of a fire service station? 1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY The significance of this study is that the design is expected to serve as a model for a functional-circulative-passive design driven fire station, the study will also help to promote maintenance culture of fire stations in Nigeria. The successful conclusion of this work will aid in creating awareness for the need of Fire Station in Abakpa-Nike, Enugu State, Nigeria, the study may additionally serve as a model for multiplication in other fire stations across Nigeria. 1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY The project will accommodate Appliance bay this is where the fire fighting and emergency response vehicles are stored. Vehicle maintenance, these industrial spaces are where the vehicles and other firefighting equipment are cleaned, maintained and stored. The Administrative and training areas, these include offices, dispatch facilities, and training and conference rooms.
