Integrated National High School
Galalan Integrated National High School conducted a
screening test in reading and the Philippine Individual Reading
Inventory (Phil-IRI), which revealed the need for targeted reading
and vocabulary instruction for its students. The need for effective
vocabulary instruction has become more crucial for Filipino
learners, especially amidst the learning losses caused by the
COVID-19 pandemic. As reported in the Philippine Daily Inquirer's
article titled "COVID-19 and the decline of Filipino students’
reading and vocabulary skills" (October 6, 2020), a study by Save
the Children Philippines found that Filipino learners' reading and
vocabulary skills have declined due to the pandemic. The study
revealed that 70% of the respondents noticed a decline in their
children's reading and vocabulary skills since the pandemic
began. The lack of access to books and educational materials, as
well as the limited opportunities for face-to-face interactions with
teachers and classmates, were among the factors that
contributed to the decline in students' reading and vocabulary
skills.
In light of this situation, Galalan Integrated National High
School proposes Project REVIVE: Reading and Vocabulary
Intervention through Various Exercises, a reading project aimed
at improving the reading and vocabulary skills of students.
Project REVIVE: Reading and Vocabulary Intervention
through Various Exercises is a proposed reading project aimed at
improving the reading and vocabulary skills of students.
Since reading is a fundamental skill that plays a crucial role
in a student's academic success and personal development. This
project aims to help struggling readers improve their reading and
vocabulary skills through various interventions, such as
interactive reading exercises and vocabulary building activities.
Objectives:
The primary objectives of Project REVIVE are as follows:
 To improve the reading and comprehension skills of
struggling readers in Galalan Integrated National High
School.
 To enhance the vocabulary skills of students by increasing
their word recognition, word meaning, and word usage.
 To promote a love for reading among students by providing
them with engaging and interactive reading materials.
The proposed methodology for Project REVIVE is a
combination of in-class and extracurricular activities that will take
place over a period of six months. The following are the activities
that will be conducted as part of the project:
Diagnostic Assessment: The project will begin with a diagnostic
assessment to identify students who are struggling with reading
and vocabulary skills. The diagnostic assessment will include a
reading comprehension test and a vocabulary test.
In-Class Reading and Vocabulary Exercises: Teachers will
conduct interactive reading exercises and vocabulary building
activities during class time to improve students' reading and
vocabulary skills.
Reading Club: Students will participate in a reading club where
they will read books selected by the project team. The reading
club will meet once a week after class hours, and students will
engage in discussions and activities related to the books.
Vocabulary Games: The project team will organize vocabulary
games, such as word puzzles and word games, to make learning
vocabulary fun and engaging.
Parent Involvement: Parents will be invited to participate in the
project by attending parent-teacher conferences and providing
support to their children in reading and vocabulary activities at
home.
The effectiveness of Project REVIVE will be evaluated
based on the following criteria:
Improvement in Reading and Vocabulary Skills: The project
team will conduct post-intervention assessments to measure the
improvement in students' reading and vocabulary skills.
Participation in Extracurricular Activities: The project team
will track the number of students participating in extracurricular
activities, such as the reading club and vocabulary games.
Student Feedback: The project team will collect feedback from
students to evaluate the effectiveness of the activities and make
necessary adjustments.
The following is the proposed budget for Project REVIVE:
 Diagnostic Assessment Materials: PHP 200
 Reading Materials: PHP 1000
 Vocabulary Games Materials: PHP 1000
 Incentives for Students: PHP 500
 Miscellaneous Expenses: PHP 500
 Total Budget: PHP 3200

WAYS FORWARD AND RECOMMENDATION:
Continuation of Project REVIVE: Despite the absence of remaining nonreaders, it is highly recommended to continue Project REVIVE in the next school year.
The following reasons support this recommendation:
a. Sustained Improvement: While the initial goal of targeting struggling readers
has been achieved, it is important to maintain the progress made and ensure
that the improved reading and vocabulary skills are sustained. Continuous
reinforcement and practice are essential for long-term retention and further
development.
b. Addressing Learning Losses: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in
significant learning losses, including declines in reading and vocabulary skills
among Filipino learners. Even if all non-readers have been addressed, there is
a need to support the overall recovery of students' reading and vocabulary
skills. By extending Project REVIVE, the school can continue to provide
targeted instruction and interventions to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on
students' educational outcomes.
c. Holistic Approach: Project REVIVE not only focuses on reading and
comprehension skills but also aims to enhance students' vocabulary skills and
promote a love for reading. These broader objectives contribute to the holistic
development of students and their overall academic success. By continuing the
project, the school can ensure a well-rounded education that nurtures students'
language proficiency and cultivates a lifelong passion for reading.
d. Sustainability and Consistency: By maintaining Project REVIVE in the next
school year, the school can establish a consistent and sustainable approach to
reading and vocabulary instruction. This allows for the implementation of
effective strategies, continuous monitoring of progress, and the opportunity to
refine and adapt interventions based on ongoing assessments and feedback.
e. Collaboration and Partnerships: To enhance the effectiveness and impact of
Project REVIVE, it is recommended to establish collaborations and
partnerships with relevant stakeholders. These may include local libraries,
community organizations, and educational institutions. By working together,
resources can be pooled, and additional support can be provided to expand the
reach of the project, such as access to a wider variety of reading materials and
opportunities for engaging reading activities beyond the school setting.
f. Professional Development for Teachers: To ensure the successful
implementation of Project REVIVE, it is crucial to provide ongoing professional
development opportunities for teachers. Training sessions and workshops can
equip educators with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively deliver
targeted reading and vocabulary instruction. This investment in teacher
development will enhance the quality of teaching and facilitate the sustainable
growth of students' reading and vocabulary skills.
g. Parent and Community Engagement: Engaging parents and the wider
community is vital for the success of Project REVIVE. The school should
organize regular meetings, workshops, and awareness campaigns to involve
parents in supporting their children's reading and vocabulary development at
home. Additionally, community initiatives, such as book drives or storytelling
events, can be organized to foster a reading culture beyond the school
environment and encourage active participation from the community in
promoting literacy.
h. Monitoring and Evaluation: Continuous monitoring and evaluation of the
project's progress are essential to assess its effectiveness and make necessary
adjustments. Regular assessments can provide valuable data on individual
student growth, overall improvement, and areas that require further attention.
This feedback loop will enable the project team to refine instructional strategies,
modify interventions, and ensure that Project REVIVE remains responsive to
the evolving needs of the students.
By implementing these recommendations and continuing Project REVIVE, Galalan
Integrated National High School can further enhance the reading and vocabulary skills
of its students, support their academic recovery from the pandemic, and foster a
lifelong love for reading and learning.
