Instructions Read through the claim below, and then as a group work out which IoAs are best suited for the activity. Are the competencies the student originally selected the best? Which IoAs would you use? You may need to revise the claim to make it better suit your IoA. Consider the points below. 1. Check the number of competencies claimed - do you need more or less? They should probably have less but this person’s specific claim only really applies well to competency 3.6 and maybe 2.3. 2. For a 20 hour claim, could this be more succinct? No they need to write a lot more. 3. Where do you insert the references for the competencies selected and their associated IoAs? After every line where the specific LOA is mentioned, as seen below. We will then get your group to present on which IoAs you selected based on the competency that the student had selected. After a discussion you will also be asked to individually submit the revised claim with the appropriate referencing for the IoAs you have chosen. Engineering claim 20 hours – Claiming competencies 1.1, 1.6, 2.3 and 3.6 Throughout semester one, part of my CHNG1108 course was to be part of a group project that designed and made a prototype that would help to solve one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals using the principles of chemical engineering, teaching us about sustainable engineering practice. It was expected that we would work as a team to research different problems in the world and existing solutions and how we could better improve them using chemical engineering. [3.6] In doing this, we learnt about the engineering design process and were required to follow the process by researching, constructing conceptual designs, testing, analysing and evaluating and making a final prototype. [2.3(a)] The outcome of this project was that we made a prototype of concrete that sourced the lime component from eggshells instead of limestone. The prototype was unsuccessful as it did not meet the standard criteria for regular concrete. Throughout the project, I believe I took on a very active role, acting as one of the leaders in the group by helping organise the making of the prototype and organising the team so that the reports would be completed. [3.6(b)] Through analysing each of the stages of the process it is clear that the prototype was unsuccessful because not enough research was conducted when looking at existing solutions and looking at quantitative data that may have affected the outcome. Before the process, it was quite daunting because the brief was so vague and I was not sure where to start, but once we had an idea, I did feel quite confident. However, throughout the process it was quite stressful because of the team environment in which the project was conducted, but it was a really good learning experience of how to effectively work in a team for engineering projects. [3.6(a)] I think overall, the main thing that has been learnt is how to work cooperatively in a team for engineering projects. Further, another large part of my learning was regarding the engineering design process and how to apply the fundamental principles of chemical engineering to help solve issues. This activity was highly relevant to my broader professional development because when working as an engineer in the future, most of my projects will be team based, meaning I will be required to communicate with others and work cooperatively in team environments. This activity has definitely informed me on how I could better improve my team work skills and how I could do things differently in the future, such as better delegation of tasks or being a better listener. [3.6(d)] Another possible activity that could have a similar outcome, but in a less formal and engineeringrelated setting, is working with others to organise an event, such as a SUEUA event. This too would require teamwork, but would be a lot more relaxed and would help me gain skills that are more relevant to communicating and cooperation. Going forward, in group projects I think I will try to be better at delegating tasks and at listening to other people’s ideas a bit more. Further, this project made me realise the importance of conducting research prior to starting the project, which is something that I will apply to the future group projects I am part of throughout my degree. This will allow me to reach more successful engineering outcomes throughout my degree and in my professional career. Below are the competencies and their IoAs.
