Autism has been a difficult subject for decades because of societal standards for what is “normal”. Children were treated as though they had no connections with the outside world when in reality it was anything but. They’ve been targets for predators because of their emotional state and possible lack of awareness. People with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) now have to face those who use their existence to push personal/political agendas, more specifically, how vaccines cause autism. Autistic people have not led easy lives and yet, are still spreading positivity and awareness for the community. Diagnosing Autism: Should Autism Be Diagnosed in Children Under the Age of Three is being used to generally explain and introduce the topic of autism. The article has multiple topics to expound upon that relate to other ideas later in the essay. Autism is a developmental brain disorder that starts showing signs in early childhood. People with autism tend to have problems with social situations and heightened sensitivity to certain sights, sounds, and textures. Autism also has similar symptoms to other common disorders like anxiety, ADHD, and OCD. The disorder affects everyday life to varying degrees, people have their individual strengths and weaknesses, and it’s not the same for everyone. It is currently unknown what causes the development of ASD and diagnoses are based on observing behaviors/thought patterns. Trauma in individuals with autism spectrum disorder is a study of forensic evidence that shows how those with ASD are at risk for experiencing traumatic events, then how they perceive and internalize that trauma.
