HIGHWAY AND RAILROAD ENGINEERING – ASSIGNMENT
Discuss at least two mode of transportation, enumerate the advantages and disadvantages
Road transportation - Road transport means transportation of goods and personnel from one
place to the other on roads.
Advantages:
1.
Less investment – compared to other types of transportation like railroads and
aviation, road transportation requires a fairly little amount of investment. Road
construction, operation, and maintenance costs are lower than those of railroads.
2.
Door to door services – The main advantage of road transport is that it can
provide door-to-door transportation of goods and supplies while also being a very costeffective mode of cartage, loading, and unloading.
3.
Wide coverage area- Road transport is frequently the only option for transporting
goods and people to and from remote locations that are not served by train, river, or air
transport.
Disadvantages:
1.
Safety risk – Road transport has a higher risk of accidents and breakdowns. As a
result, motor travel is less safe than other modes of transportation.
2.
Environmental impact – Building roads necessitates the melting of tar or the
formulation of concrete, both of which can be hazardous to the surrounding
environment. Since roads have been a major enabler of motorized transport, these
vehicles emit a significant amount of pollution in the form of nitrogen dioxide, volatile
organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and various harmful air pollutants, including
benzene, which have negative respiratory health effects and pose a serious threat to
global warming.
3.
Traffic congestion – Congestion is quite obvious—roads clogged with
automobiles, trucks, and buses, sidewalks clogged with pedestrians.
Air transport is a popular option for organizations wishing to speed their shipping process and
reach worldwide markets. Passengers and freight are transported by aircraft such as planes and
helicopters.
Advantages:
1.
Fast service – Air transportation provides easy, dependable, and quick
transportation. It is regarded as the most cost-effective method of transporting
peregrinated products. It provides a standard, convenient, dependable, and rapid
service.
2.
High security – High level of protection with a low danger of robbery and injury.
Because airport safety limits on cargo are tightly enforced, aviation shipping has a high
level of security. Tight airport controls also help to reduce cargo theft and loss.
3.
Natural route – An airplane can fly to any location without encountering any
natural hurdles or barriers. Because customs formalities are simple to assemble. It
eliminates the need for additional time to obtain clearance. Air travel is employed for
relief efforts in the aftermath of earthquakes, floods, accidents, and famines.
Disadvantages:
1.
Risky – Air travel is the riskiest mode of transportation because a slight crash can
result in significant losses to cargo, customers, and workers. Collisions are more often
than on other modes of transportation.
2.
Expensive – Air travel is widely regarded as the most expensive mode of
transportation. The cost of maintaining aircraft is higher, as are the costs of building
aerodromes and avions. That is why plane travel is so expensive that it is out of reach for
most people
3.
Limited product variation – There are a wide range of materials that are not
suited for such products, such explosives, gases, batteries, and burned solids and liquids,
to mention a few.
